The team was exceedingly fortunate in that Mr. Paul E. Brown, a member of the faculty and a former intercollegiate champion, volunteered his as- sistance in the training of a squad. From the first, members of the team have trained seriously, and reported regularly to practice. In the first meet of the year, the University of Delaware Interscholastics, Schumann placed first in the shot, and second in the pole vault, being beaten by his brother of Germantown Academy. Ghormley made good a third in the javelin, and ran the total number of points for Severn up to nine. The Maroon aggregation is now training for the Maryland State Meet. Chances of success seem reasonably bright. The rest of the season's schedule is as follows: May 9-Eastern Inter- scholastics at Princeton. May 23--Maryland State Meet at Baltimore. ll WMHWWJWIIJJJWWWWWiallzwfmfyfpggiw W Wd QU Qmaan C l7QW00?A7J177MI1 Anchor Q 00 'aZI'M' 'ff' E 2 r t E . - - Q e' W- S E , ' E S E . .. . E E E , E i . WWWNN W WW QWNNWN Varsity Baseball Xatcs Qmgrj Zimmerman Bassett Packard McKoy Bettens Cutter Van Aucken Holt, Mr. Halsted fcoachj lflower, Monks, Cooke, Pratt QCaptain5, Bauer, Sellers, Dougherty, McMaster The baseball team of 1951 turned in some fine performances, but on the whole it was not exceptional. It started off the season by administering 21 sound defeat to the Charlotte Hall nine at the field of the latter. Then came the spring vacation and needless to say this threw the team off its stride. Vocational was the first to conquer Severn's little band, and by a close game at that. Then came Poly, a strong aggressive, wideawake, team. Van Aucken deserves much credit for the way he held down the ancient rival to an 8-4 score, with Severn on the short side. Witlu a little support he should have easily suppressed them. Loyola and McDonough soon after- wards captured Severn's standards. And so followed all the games. When the team was going they could not be beaten but they seldom could get started. However, everyone on the team can attest that a lot of fun was had by all, despite the fact that the maroon has seen better seasons. No small amount of credit is deserved by Coach Halsted. Wlmenever anything went wrong, he was always the first to realize it and to remedy the fault. Wlmen one stops to consider the unlimited practice together that baseball requires, and that the Halstedmen had only a few back from last year, one cannot help but feel that they had a fairly successful season.
