W WN QNNWWN Football VARSITY RLSUML HE outlook for a successful football season during the early days of September was not so bright especially since Severn undefeated through out the 1929 season was now a marked opponent Added to this was the fact that the coaching staff had but two regulars from the champions of 1929 Captain McComas and Reed upon which to build their 1950 edition Regard less of this rather gloomy outlook everybody went to work to do his best and the result was the Championship of Maryland TOML Severn opened with Tome here on Friday October 10 1930 Our boys showed the effects of playing their first game of the season while Tome was greatly aided by their contest the week before with Swarthmore Prep The game proved to be a defensive battle the Severn offense not yet functioning to its mid season effectiveness The first half ended in a scoreless tie but in the third quarter Cutter intercepted one of the far too promiscuous Tome passes and scampered for a touchdown Eddie Schumann place kicked a per fect oal which turned out to be the winning margin. Tome immediately rallied and drove to Severns three yard mark only to be held for three straight downs by a Stonewall defense. Then in desperation the boys from Port Deposit threw a flat pass for their only score of the game. Their place- kicker never had a chance to kick goal as the Severnites swarmed on him in their frantic efforts to block the kick. The final score was Severn 7 Tome 6. The game proved to be a thriller but the boys from Severna Park would have been at least two touchdowns the better club had the game been played at any later date in the season. Thomas fullback for Tome was their outstand- ing performer while the entire Severn team must be given credit for their lighting defensive stands. LOYOLA The team played Loyola on the following Friday at Homewood. This game showed Severn at their peak for the first time, and the boys displayed a terrific punch in their offense, giving the Enright boys a sound physical beating. The score was 6-0, a pass from Struven to Reed being the winning margin, which does not show the vast superiority of our boys. Eddie Schumann enjoyed a brilliant defensive day, while Bettens, who was thrown into the breach for the first time, earned his place on the team by some uhard runningfi A f Page 50 il Wwwwmr W WWW Wwww wxwwkw WNWW WWWYYWWW wwwxsN'NKWWxNWi'S'Xi WN Sf 5 2 4 f 5 Z 4 gt 4 5 Z 5 5 4 3 2 Z Z 5 a Z 4 Z Us
