Once more Severn has put forth a championship team and now the squad is receiving its just rewards. Those who were awarded gold footballs as well as letters from amongst the seniors are as follows: Baker Bassett Cullen Childs Flower Ghormley Reed Schumann and Struven. Seniors receiving letters alone are Herold Packard and Manager Walmsley. When the Maryland All-State football team was published we found that Eric Reed and Edward Schumann had been selected' Reed at halfback and Schumann at tackle. Reed was also elected Captain of the team an honor which he justly deserved. Nibbs and Wesson were honorary guests at the banquet as they were both captains of their respective teams' Nibbs captaining the unior Varsity and Wesson the 130 pound team. On the two school publications the Severn Anchor and the Anchor and Wheel the class of 1931 is well represented. E. G. Smith Assistant Editor-in-chief' H. B. Walmsley Business Manager' L. H. Bauer Circulation Manager and R. Teel an Associate Editor were the seniors doing their bit to make the Severn Anchor in its first year a success. The upperclassmen of the Editorial Staff of the Anchor and Wheel are Bassett Cullen Flower E. G. Smith Struven and Walmsley. This year s graduating class chose as its officers the following: . William Struven r. President' Ericsson Reed Vice-Pre-ident' Walter C. Flower Sec- retary' and Edward Schumann Treasurer. These officers have done their part in upholding the dignity of the class as well as administering its affairs. Senior members of the student council are Reed, presidentg Walmsley and Struven. These student councilmen also have done their duty efficiently and well, and are deserving of praise for their excellent example set to the under classmen. Thus we see that the class of 1931 is equally prominent in athletics, E S Q litera ursuits, scholastic work, and school overnment. W WN QNNWWN Football VARSITY RLSUML HE outlook for a successful football season during the early days of September was not so bright especially since Severn undefeated through out the 1929 season was now a marked opponent Added to this was the fact that the coaching staff had but two regulars from the champions of 1929 Captain McComas and Reed upon which to build their 1950 edition Regard less of this rather gloomy outlook everybody went to work to do his best and the result was the Championship of Maryland TOML Severn opened with Tome here on Friday October 10 1930 Our boys showed the effects of playing their first game of the season while Tome was greatly aided by their contest the week before with Swarthmore Prep The game proved to be a defensive battle the Severn offense not yet functioning to its mid season effectiveness The first half ended in a scoreless tie but in the third quarter Cutter intercepted one of the far too promiscuous Tome passes and scampered for a touchdown Eddie Schumann place kicked a per fect oal which turned out to be the winning margin. Tome immediately rallied and drove to Severns three yard mark only to be held for three straight downs by a Stonewall defense. Then in desperation the boys from Port Deposit threw a flat pass for their only score of the game. Their place- kicker never had a chance to kick goal as the Severnites swarmed on him in their frantic efforts to block the kick. The final score was Severn 7 Tome 6. The game proved to be a thriller but the boys from Severna Park would have been at least two touchdowns the better club had the game been played at any later date in the season. Thomas fullback for Tome was their outstand- ing performer while the entire Severn team must be given credit for their lighting defensive stands. LOYOLA The team played Loyola on the following Friday at Homewood. This game showed Severn at their peak for the first time, and the boys displayed a terrific punch in their offense, giving the Enright boys a sound physical beating. The score was 6-0, a pass from Struven to Reed being the winning margin, which does not show the vast superiority of our boys. Eddie Schumann enjoyed a brilliant defensive day, while Bettens, who was thrown into the breach for the first time, earned his place on the team by some uhard runningfi A f Page 50 il Wwwwmr W WWW Wwww wxwwkw WNWW WWWYYWWW wwwxsN'NKWWxNWi'S'Xi WN Sf 5 2 4 f 5 Z 4 gt 4 5 Z 5 5 4 3 2 Z Z 5 a Z 4 Z Us ann!!! Poly immediately opened with a series of effective forward passes and finally their second touchdown due in most part to some great work on the part of Captain Boots Ives and Billy McLean. Soon after this the Severna Park residents experienced a chill when the Poly aerial attack again began to function. However we soon gained possession of the ball and we appeared touchdown bound as the final gun went off It was a great game and it is generally agreed that the better team won. As for the individual high lights of the game it would be a crime besides being impossible to single out any particular stars from either team. The score at the end of the game: Severn 14 Poly 12. McDoNoo1-1 McDonogh was our next guest and they proved to be a tough nut to crack. The Severn boys were in the throes of a let-down following the Poly game, otherwise the contest would not have been close. As it happened, we entered the fourth quarter trailing 7-6. We then settled down and punched out an- other touchdown for a 12-7 win. The team learned a valuable lesson this day. ST. The hardest game for the junior Varsity was the Championship Game with Gilman. In a practice game with Gilman played at Severn the home team was victorious by a 6-0 score. When the team journeyed to Roland Park to play the Championship Game everything was in fine shape except for thefact that Atkins the sturdy fullback was under the handicap of a recent injury. Gilman was imbued with a fighting spirit which finally won them the game. Early in the first part of the game Captain Woodward star fullback for Gilman went through for the first score. The Severn team seemingly not to be outdone scored on the next two plays. After Nophsker had run forty yards for the score Holt added a point which gave Severn a lead. After a misunderstanding by the Severn backfield men which netted Gilman a touchdown after the Grey team had recovered a fumble, the Maroon and White team again ran into difficulty. This time Gilman blocked a kick deep in their own territory, and soon scored. Although it was a tough game to lose, the team took it in a sportsman- like manner. Nibbs and Nophsker played fine games for Severn, both offen- sively 'and defensively. fPage 541 Whwhhwwm WW WNWYWWWWWWWWNVWWW WWYW 3' 3 Z 4 3 Z 4 4 4 f f ? 4 Z , Z 5 5 4 Z Z 4 Z Z 9 4 ? 2 'WHwrwwwwrwmmwxwwxwwwWW C 1 -S' m , ZQWIQJJAYMIQ Anchor Q 77 W? 5 3 S 3 3 3 3 3 N LS W 7 al07dnnfynmflilllllfllpplgm.MIM anWawfmfnfannlamwwmmfffallmmrfmnnmmfllf M Q S S S 3 S 3 S 3 3 S 2 li S Q s 3 S s Q S S S 3 Z ll 30 Pound Class Wakeheld Klein Knowles Morton Peyton Wright Wesson Carter fCaptainj Smith Bauer L Teel Coach Mr DeBell HE Severn 130-pound team closed its successful season on November 18 with a scoreless tie with McDonogh. It ended the season with no defeats. The 150 s opened up their season at home in a game played against St. Paul. The team won a hard earned victory by the score of 14-2. St. Paul scored a safety in the last few minutes to play when Wesson had been taken out of the game because of an injured shoulder. The next game was played at Gilman with Severn coming out on top. This was the first league game and the team did well to win it by 12-0. McDonogh invaded Severn for the third game and attempted to stop the Maroons winning streak but in vain. Severns two backs Dougherty and Teel starred in this game and be ween the pair they ran up a 19-0 score. Both players seemed to have the knack of intercepting forward passes for exceedingly successful results. The team then made a journey to St. Paul. In this game the DeBellites came from behind to win out by the score of 13-7. In the opening tilt of the season with Friends School, Severn outplayed their opponents winning by a 35-0 score. This game was marked by a large number of penalties given to Severn for motion in the backfield, and by the fact that the newly organized 105-pound team was given a chance to play in its first game against a team that was much heavier than the little Severnites. In the second conflict of the schedule Severn met a reverse by losing to McDonogh 31-0. Had it not been for McDonogh's passing attack Severn would probably have won this game. The 118-pounders continuously made ground thru their opponents line and around the ends, but due to inexperience they fumbled at the crucial moment with McDonogh recovering the ball. With the defeat of the previous week still fresh in their minds revenge was sought in the game with Gilman which Severn won 20-0. This game like the first Friends' game was marked with 125 yards in penalties given to Severn for motion in backlield and holding. Witlu spirit still rising, the next journey was to McDonogh, Md., where the most thrilling and hardest fought junior football game was enacted. Here Wwww. The first game was played with the veteran Calvert Hall aggregation and Severn lost 4-0. Nothing can be said about this game except that Severn fought against a fast and clever team, which should have won, and did. The next two games before Christmas leave saw Severn lose. The first of these two was lost to Forest Park by the score of 2-1, and the next to Poly by 3-0. On January 14, Severn went to Baltimore and played City College on a muddy field. Severn was very optimistic before this game, but City scored live goals to Severn's none and turned the team into a group of boys hungry for victory. The next Wednesday, Mt. St. joe came to Severn and was defeated 2-1. The soccer team now looked like an organization with ability and determination to win. The best performance was turned in at the next game played, when Gilman came to Severn. For three quarters neither team scored a goal, but the triumvirate of Captain Wolfenden, Dougherty, and Zimmer- man found their stride and when the Gilman boys left they took the short end of a 5-0 score. The season wound up with the strong Tome team beating Severn 1-0 in a closely contested battle. Either team should have won, but Tome got a good break which they took advantage of, scoring the winning goal. Shepard, Smith, Struven Capt. Attack , Reed fCapt. Defensej, I. Shepard, Lawrence, R. Teel, Crosley, Samuels Due to early publication of the Severn ANCHOR 8: WHEEI., we are unable to give a full account of the 1951 Lacrosse team. However, we can give a few short accounts of what has happened up to the time the book goes to press. After a few practice games, the team shaped into form and opened the regular schedule with a decisive victory over Vifoodbrook school by beating them fourteen to nothing. Next we came up against a formidable foe in City College of Baltimore. City has always been a tough nut for the Severn stickmen to crack and this year the story was the same. The team came through, however, winning the game three to two. This was the second league game that we had won, so naturally the team was in the frame of mind to win the rest of the games thereby gaining the championship. The following game was with the Swarthmore College junior Varsity. Severn beat them eight to nothing. This was a non-league game. After this game the school was let out for a twelve day spring vaca- tion. They came back and had just one week to get in shape for one of the toughest games of the year with the Navy Plebes. And tough it was. The ball was up and down the field all the time. There was no one-sided playing whatsoever. Severn came through again, though, with a six to four victory. X W? It started off the season by administering 21 sound defeat to the Charlotte Hall nine at the field of the latter. Then came the spring vacation and needless to say this threw the team off its stride. Vocational was the first to conquer Severn's little band, and by a close game at that. Then came Poly, a strong aggressive, wideawake, team. Van Aucken deserves much credit for the way he held down the ancient rival to an 8-4 score, with Severn on the short side. Witlu a little support he should have easily suppressed them. Loyola and McDonough soon after- wards captured Severn's standards. And so followed all the games. When the team was going they could not be beaten but they seldom could get started. However, everyone on the team can attest that a lot of fun was had by all, despite the fact that the maroon has seen better seasons. No small amount of credit is deserved by Coach Halsted. Wlmenever anything went wrong, he was always the first to realize it and to remedy the fault. Wlmen one stops to consider the unlimited practice together that baseball requires, and that the Halstedmen had only a few back from last year, one cannot help but feel that they had a fairly successful season. The team was exceedingly fortunate in that Mr. Paul E. Brown, a member of the faculty and a former intercollegiate champion, volunteered his as- sistance in the training of a squad. From the first, members of the team have trained seriously, and reported regularly to practice. In the first meet of the year, the University of Delaware Interscholastics, Schumann placed first in the shot, and second in the pole vault, being beaten by his brother of Germantown Academy. Ghormley made good a third in the javelin, and ran the total number of points for Severn up to nine. The Maroon aggregation is now training for the Maryland State Meet. Chances of success seem reasonably bright. The rest of the season's schedule is as follows: May 9-Eastern Inter- scholastics at Princeton. A little group of Severn students, leaders in school spirit and school activities, inspired by the desire for more intimate comradeship and higher school ideals, pioneered this undertaking, which was in the nature of a real innovation at Severn. Inaugurating the fraternity was not without its difficulties. Certain misgivings on the part of the school authorities as to the desirability of preparatory school fraternities in general had to be over- come, and suitable quarters secured in which to hold meetings. Like all new ventures, Sigma Phi Sigma had to prove itself during the first year or two of its existence. With the building of the new Mess Hall, a room adjoining the Commons Room was made available for the fraternity and the organiza- tion forged ahead. A very definite addition to the social activities of the school was found in a number of dances sponsored by and very ably conducted by the fraternity. The officers of Sigma Phi Sigma for the school year 1950-31 were Robert S, Sloan, president, john XV. Struven, jr., vice-president, and W. T. Rossell, secretary and treasurer. One of the many successful enterprises was the musical organization. Due largely to the efforts of Mr. Robert Pippin an orchestra find a quartet were formed. At first the orchestra was composed of Riddlesberger Baxter Bauer and Potter. just before the Christmas leave Riddlesberger left but two new members were added to the listg these being Doe and Yates. Although the orchestra did not play for any special events, a great deal of enjoyment was derived by the members and by the students from the frequent get-togethers' '. The quartet, conducted by Mr. Pippin, was the greatest success of all. The members of the quartet were Walmsley, Struven, Yates and Stevens. The quartet proved its sterling at a recital given in the latter part of March.
