' ZA Qivff'.Q. - 'Wag' USS SICVICRN tAU lily is a l lt-et Oilt-1 whose mission is to provide units ol' the Navy, lioth at anchor and underway, with Navy Special lfuel Oil, Jet l uel, Aviation 1' ' ' t asolinc, bottled gasses and drumnied lubricants. Sl'lVl'IltN's duties have been varied and sometimes unusual. ln addition to the logistic support for which she is designed she has served as mother-ship for submarines and minesweepers, has refueled blimps at sea, and has transported and delivered at sea almost everything from aircraft to motor vehicles. The SEVERN is a working ship, and while her job is not glamorous, it is very important. Without fuel from oilers like the SEVERN, the fighting ships and planes of the Navy would be unable to accomplish their missions. She has established a proud tradition of reliability delivering her cargo when and where it is needed with efficiency and safety. The SEVERN was built at the Bethe- hem Steel Shipyard, Sparrows Point, Mary- land, in 194-1. She is named for the Severn River, which flows through Annapolis. Maryland For the first two years after her commissioning in 194-1, the SEVERN oper- ated as a fresh water carrier. While under- going an enemy air attack off Leyte in 1945, she was credited with shooting down a .lapanese aircraft. ln 1946, she served as part of the task Force engaged with the Atom Bomb test at Bikini Atoll. ln 1947 the SEVERN was converted to an oiler. For the next three years she operated between Persian Gulf ports and Japan, Germany and the East Coast of the United States. After a short period in the Pacific mothball', fleet during 1950, SEVERN was reeommissioned and sailed to Japan in early 1951. However, in April of that year she was transferred from the West Coast to the East Coast and her present homeport of Newport, Rhode Island. Since her transfer to the East Coast, SEVERN has made trips to the Mediter- ranean for operations with the Sixth Fleet, refueling Navy task groups and visiting such ports as Rome. Athens, Cannes. Bar- celona and London. Her travels include several trips to the North Atlantic and Caribbean. She has participated in exercises with Spanish. Italian, Greek. French. Bri- tish and Canadian ships. The SEVERNS last deployment was to the Mediterranean from November 1969 to May 1970. One of the oldest ships in the Navy. SEYERN has a quarter-century of service behind her. She continues to serve with pride and honor. N 1
