Ready for her mission, Sl'.VlultN lelt Newport on Z9 January, and refueled several ships while participating in a Navy 'liask Force exercise. .X rt-fueling cable fouled the port propeller and SHVPIHN steamed for Puerto ltico to effect repairs. This casualty was l'urther complicated by accidental damage to the starboard pro pcller while entering San Juan Bay. With both main engines out of conirnission, the SIQVICRN was drydocked for repairs, After a inonth ol hot weather and hard work replacing a propeller and shaft, Sl'lVl'lltN crossed the Atlantic and began refueling ships in the Mediterranean. lioiler safety valves were repaired in Naples enabling her to meet the next commitment. While entering Augusta Bay, Sicily, the SEVERNE. port low pressure turbine suffered blade damage. Emergency repairs were completed and SISYECRN was able to steam with her stars board engine and port high pressure turbine to Hellenic Ship- yard in Skaramanga, Greece. There shipyard workers and the ship's crew accomplished the major overhaul of the low pres- sure turbine which consisted of removing the pound rotor and 11,000 pound casing from the ship. replacing damaged blading, and restoring the engine to operating condition. With repairs completed. the SEQVHRN completed her Mediterranean deployment. Sl'IYl'lltN engineers had few rewards this cruise. Returning to Newport with only Jill ships having been refueled was dis- appointingg however, it was the engineering departments efforts that enabled SICVICRN to complete her deployment. .-Xf?,.'r- ' listen., -1 - sf, J ' . , -
