This time is usually equally divided between manning the underway replenishment rigs and performing routine maintanence and preservation, which is necessary to keep the ship in good working condition. Although the SEVERN did not have many ships alongside this deployment, Deck Department was always ready to send the rigs across whenever the opportunity presented itself. Ships which received either NSFO, JP-5, or AVGAS from one or more of SEVERN,S six rigs included the aircraft carrier USS ROOSEVELT, the cruiser USS ALBANY, several destroyers, and a few amphi- bious types. Because of the large amount of time spent in port during this deployment, there was more time than usual to perform what is generally called topside maintanence, which is better known to the personnel of Deck Department as chipping and painting. Because of the bad weather encountered right after our departure from Newport in January, the entire main deck area from the foscle to the fantail required a complete job of preservation. This job was accomplished in the hot sun of San Juan and provided all hands with their first suntan of 1971. Our prolonged stay in Skaramanga, Greece enabled our seamen to paint the water- line of the ship and to put another coat of haze gray on the sides. The sometimes forgotten members of Deck Department, the Gunners Mates, had a chance to perform their speciality on both the transit over and back by firing a total of 10 rounds from each of the SEVERNE four 3!50 mounts. 3 Q 1 3 2 I i Mil
