H 1 QQ., ' ZA Qivff'.Q. - 'Wag' USS SICVICRN tAU lily is a l lt-et Oilt-1 whose mission is to provide units ol' the Navy, lioth at anchor and underway, with Navy Special lfuel Oil, Jet l uel, Aviation 1' ' ' t asolinc, bottled gasses and drumnied lubricants. Sl'lVl'IltN's duties have been varied and sometimes unusual. ln addition to the logistic support for which she is designed she has served as mother-ship for submarines and minesweepers, has refueled blimps at sea, and has transported and delivered at sea almost everything from aircraft to motor vehicles. The SEVERN is a working ship, and while her job is not glamorous, it is very important. Without fuel from oilers like the SEVERN, the fighting ships and planes of the Navy would be unable to accomplish their missions. She has established a proud tradition of reliability delivering her cargo when and where it is needed with efficiency and safety. The SEVERN was built at the Bethe- hem Steel Shipyard, Sparrows Point, Mary- land, in 194-1. She is named for the Severn River, which flows through Annapolis. Maryland For the first two years after her commissioning in 194-1, the SEVERN oper- ated as a fresh water carrier. While under- going an enemy air attack off Leyte in 1945, she was credited with shooting down a .lapanese aircraft. ln 1946, she served as part of the task Force engaged with the Atom Bomb test at Bikini Atoll. ln 1947 the SEVERN was converted to an oiler. For the next three years she operated between Persian Gulf ports and Japan, Germany and the East Coast of the United States. After a short period in the Pacific mothball', fleet during 1950, SEVERN was reeommissioned and sailed to Japan in early 1951. However, in April of that year she was transferred from the West Coast to the East Coast and her present homeport of Newport, Rhode Island. Since her transfer to the East Coast, SEVERN has made trips to the Mediter- ranean for operations with the Sixth Fleet, refueling Navy task groups and visiting such ports as Rome. Athens, Cannes. Bar- celona and London. Her travels include several trips to the North Atlantic and Caribbean. She has participated in exercises with Spanish. Italian, Greek. French. Bri- tish and Canadian ships. The SEVERNS last deployment was to the Mediterranean from November 1969 to May 1970. One of the oldest ships in the Navy. SEYERN has a quarter-century of service behind her. She continues to serve with pride and honor. N 1 i , 'L' , 32 f L I, .wa J, Lui Q1 FORMER COMMANUINCB OFFLCIER JANUARY 7010 APRIL 71 CAPTALN CHARLES E RAY L L LL, ,LL-LL L L L L L.. Q 3 ,sl , r .Q I DECK DEPARTMENT LTJG FRANK J. SPROLE First Lieutenant f D k D t nt a de lo ment means only one thing' many long hours For the members o ec epar me ' p y . of hard work. This time is usually equally divided between manning the underway replenishment rigs and performing routine maintanence and preservation, which is necessary to keep the ship in good working condition. Although the SEVERN did not have many ships alongside this deployment, Deck Department was always ready to send the rigs across whenever the opportunity presented itself. Ships which received either NSFO, JP-5, or AVGAS from one or more of SEVERN,S six rigs included the aircraft carrier USS ROOSEVELT, the cruiser USS ALBANY, several destroyers, and a few amphi- bious types. Because of the large amount of time spent in port during this deployment, there was more time than usual to perform what is generally called topside maintanence, which is better known to the personnel of Deck Department as chipping and painting. Because of the bad weather encountered right after our departure from Newport in January, the entire main deck area from the foscle to the fantail required a complete job of preservation. This job was accomplished in the hot sun of San Juan and provided all hands with their first suntan of 1971. Our prolonged stay in Skaramanga, Greece enabled our seamen to paint the water- line of the ship and to put another coat of haze gray on the sides. The sometimes forgotten members of Deck Department, the Gunners Mates, had a chance to perform their speciality on both the transit over and back by firing a total of 10 rounds from each of the SEVERNE four 3!50 mounts. 3 Q 1 3 2 I i Mil I- NIS R. Ready for her mission, Sl'.VlultN lelt Newport on Z9 January, and refueled several ships while participating in a Navy 'liask Force exercise. .X rt-fueling cable fouled the port propeller and SHVPIHN steamed for Puerto ltico to effect repairs. This casualty was l'urther complicated by accidental damage to the starboard pro pcller while entering San Juan Bay. With both main engines out of conirnission, the SIQVICRN was drydocked for repairs, After a inonth ol hot weather and hard work replacing a propeller and shaft, Sl'lVl'lltN crossed the Atlantic and began refueling ships in the Mediterranean. lioiler safety valves were repaired in Naples enabling her to meet the next commitment. Emergency repairs were completed and SISYECRN was able to steam with her stars board engine and port high pressure turbine to Hellenic Ship- yard in Skaramanga, Greece. There shipyard workers and the ship's crew accomplished the major overhaul of the low pres- sure turbine which consisted of removing the pound rotor and 11,000 pound casing from the ship. replacing damaged blading, and restoring the engine to operating condition. With repairs completed. the SEQVHRN completed her Mediterranean deployment. Sl'IYl'lltN engineers had few rewards this cruise.
