By 20 December, the 17th had successfully withdrawn to Hungnam and was evacuated from the infamous American Dunkirk. Behind these men, the beach was strewn with dead Americans. One Associated Press correspondent grimly described the burial of the dead while rifle squads held oif the Reds around the edge of this emergency graveyard. A bulldozer rolled 200 bodies into one common grave. On Christmas Day- the day predicted as V-Day only a month before-the last tattered troops were taken out of northern Korea.
