The Chinese finally closed in on the re- mainder of the defense force and, after giving them morphine and bandaging their Wounds, freed them. Lieutenant Mortrude, shot in the knee and head, walked to Hagaru-ri from the blown-out bridge. At 1330 on 2 December, he reached friendly lines.
