A thin, powdery snow was biting at them, carried by stiff, freezing winds from the lake. The ice was so thick 76 mm shells had ricocheted off Without even cracking it. Inside, the body of Colonel Don Faith lay frozen stiff. Finfrock and several others tried unsuccessfully to start the truck and fi- nally gave up. The Chinese finally closed in on the re- mainder of the defense force and, after giving them morphine and bandaging their Wounds, freed them. Lieutenant Mortrude, shot in the knee and head, walked to Hagaru-ri from the blown-out bridge. At 1330 on 2 December, he reached friendly lines.
