A commander of the Ethiopian unit briefs his men before they depart on a patrol in Korea. 1700, 1 December, the group of officers decided to Wait Where they were. Word of their extremely precarious position, they argued, must certainly have reached Hagaru-ri by now. Aid was undoubtedly on the Way. They waited an hour until dark and then small arms fire and mortar shelling forced the column to move on. As they reached a small lumber village, the retreat turned into a jumbled, terrifying nightmare of disaster. An enemy machine gun raked the column pointblank. Bullets splattered the Windshields of the first three trucks and the drivers were killed instantly. On the tailgate of the third, Lieutenant Campbell swung into action. He scrambled off the truck and leaped into a ditch with his carbine. Staggering over a body with an arm torn off he fell against the embankment and opened fire at the flashes from the machine gun. Nearby a truck lay overturned, its Wheels turned toward the sky. It Was a scene of wild disorder and it was to get Worse. Troops land at beach during amphibious maneuvers near Hokkaido , Japan. Men of the 15th AA Battalion and the 32nd Tank Co. enioy hot coffee. Wounded men lay scattered about the road and Held screaming for help. Up the road someone kept yelling for men to drive the trucks through. Chinese columns closed in on the trucks with guns going. A white phos- phorous grenade exploded at the end of the column. Someone screamed: Look out! A three-quarter ton truck barrelled over the em- bankment and wounded men spilled out and under the rolling vehicle. The line had gone mad with frantic, Korean laborers unload empty shell casings which will be sal- vaged for reuse. Abu w hi. 4iiiL. 9lQSifii panicky men and echoed with the agonized cries of the Wounded and dying. Campbell poured his last three rounds into the roadblock and dove into a culvert under a nearby railroad track. Crawling through he found a man wounded in the leg and helped him along. Corporal Camoesas, the company aid man, herded fifteen men, none of whom he knew, together and they headed for the reservoir. Two other soldiers joined them, dragging a Wounded man, and the corporal's group picked up and An M-4 tank blasts enemy emplacements.
