had directed mortar fire throughout the night, wearily volunteered for the job of recapturing the hill. He jerked an American tommygun from the arms of a stiffened Red corpse and yelled for volunteers. I need some fighting men, he said, We've got a counterattack to make. He got his volunteers. Mortar shells were gone now and the small force attacked the hill with small arms and rifles. Halfway to the top of the objective a bullet ripped through Wilson's arm, spinning him to the ground. He got up and went on, leading the force up the hill. A second bullet caught him in the chest and he fell to one knee. That one bit, he gasped to a comrade nearby. He struggled to his feet and took two steps and a third rifle bullet smacked his forehead. Lieutenant Wilson toppled down the hillside dead. SFC Fred Sugua rushed into his spot and waved the volunteer squad on. They charged up the hill.
