this deadly strip. The Chinese opened fire and the truck column was swept with lead. Trapped, the column answered the fire. It was a frustrating pitch-battle, for the battalion's objective, the remaining perimeter of MacLean's task force, was now just across the ice and not much farther than a mile away by the longer route along the road. Then gunfire began to riddle the column from the friendly units across the icy sliver to the east. Convinced that the force across the ice was mistaking them for Chinese, MacLean headed out into the open ice patch to make contact with his men and stop the fire. Faith, meanwhile, directed two more companies to cross a high hill directly north of the ice strip, encircle the roadblock and take it from side and rear. As the com- panies pulled out on their assignment they watched in horror as MacLean, crossing the flat, unprotected ice finger, was hit again and again by gunfire from the Buddies aid a wounded man after u battle.
