Caught in the deadly crossfire, the Reds were cut to pieces and finally re- treated back up the side of the hill. Campbell wiped blood from his face and got set for a repeat performance but it was an hour or two before the Reds tried again. Back at the command post, Colonel Faith received orders to abandon this X Corps attack and withdraw and consolidate his forces for more cohesive action against the enemy. At 0300 hours on 29 November, Colonel Faith's executive officer went forward to the battle-locked companies with orders from Colonel Mac- Lean to prepare at once to pull out and join the rest of his forces four miles to the south. Because of the enemy roadblock which split the two elements of his task force, MacLean ordered Faith to destroy as much equip- ment as possible, keeping only enough trucks to haul out the wounded, and head south.
