Cpl Wilfred Hunkms makes shot of a shot On the alert for any movement of the enemy. also seized and organized the highest ground on the two ridgelines overlooking the road. The defense of both companies was seriously weakened by the loss. Under the withering fire, wire communication with the head- quarters of Task Force Commander Colonel MacLean and the 57th Field Artillery Battalion were shattered soon after the attack started. Colonel Faith succeeded in establishing feeble radio contact with MacLean and learned then that the Reds were also battling other units of MacLean's task fdrce. This explained why the artillery, involved with the more immediate necessity of defending its own position, was unable to support Faith's battalion with any kind of sustained fire.
