Effie? 4 gi? Weary Infantrymen glad of a chance to rest on a roadside after taking an obiective. Probing patrols came first, drawing fire from a pla- toon along the road. Lieutenant Smith, suspecting that the enemy force was really a reconnaissance patrol sent to spot specific American positions, tried to stop the fire. Meantime the entire line was alive with the sharp crack of rifle fire. The Reds were pulling the same stunt all along the defense perimeter. A few minutes after midnight the full attack came. One Chinese company struck south along the road and another came shrieking out of the darkness in the east to hit the boundary between the two rifle companies that were east of the road. The defense perimeter burst alive with gunfire. Steady mortar and small arms fire ripped into Colonel Faith's battalion. The Chinese had WO fig! Robert J.
