Colonel Faith dropped back and set up his com- mand post among a few farmhouses in a small valley less than a thousand yards behind the front lines. It got dark early. For the first hour or two after dark, the night was punctuated with the dull thud of bursting shells around the perimeter. Effie? 4 gi? Weary Infantrymen glad of a chance to rest on a roadside after taking an obiective. Probing patrols came first, drawing fire from a pla- toon along the road. Lieutenant Smith, suspecting that the enemy force was really a reconnaissance patrol sent to spot specific American positions, tried to stop the fire. He dashed up and down the line yelling: Don't fire! Don't fire! When the gunfire had finally faded, the Commies were back in their shade of darkness. Meantime the entire line was alive with the sharp crack of rifle fire. The Reds were pulling the same stunt all along the defense perimeter. A few minutes after midnight the full attack came. One Chinese company struck south along the road and another came shrieking out of the darkness in the east to hit the boundary between the two rifle companies that were east of the road. The defense perimeter burst alive with gunfire. Steady mortar and small arms fire ripped into Colonel Faith's battalion. The Chinese had WO fig! Robert J.
