Henry Gorzel places it in hole and connects wires. hills. Colonel Faith dropped back and set up his com- mand post among a few farmhouses in a small valley less than a thousand yards behind the front lines. It got dark early. For the first hour or two after dark, the night was punctuated with the dull thud of bursting shells around the perimeter. The forward observers had not completed the registration of artillery and mortar defense fires be- fore dark and had to finish up the job. Then it grew quiet. For another hour or two, until after 2100, the hills were silent. Back at the command post, Colonel Faith had called a meeting of the company commanders and it was in progress. Lieutenant Cecil G. Smith, executive officer of Com- pany A, was quietly checking his outfit which had dug in near the road. Then all hell started breaking loose. General Douglas MacArthur prepares to board plane during one of his many trips to the fighting front.
