On the morning of October 5, the 7th began moving again. This time our destination was Pusan and our ob- jective was to train for the next big step in the Korean strife-an amphibious landing in North Korea. The lst Cavalry Division, together with the lst ROK Division, meanwhile was to seize the initiative and attack along the northwestern route, securing the line from Pusan to Taejon, Taegu, Suwon and Kumchon, north of Seoul. .2 6 On October 29, the 7th made its second landing of the Korean War. This time the Bayonet Division task force slipped into Iwon and the drive toward Chosin Reservoir and the Yalu River was underway. By now the Korean winter had arrived in all its raw fury. It was bitter cold and snow hampered operations. The enemy was scattered but determined and the battle here above the 38th Parallel was a dogged, agonizing one. frequent. Pockets of resistance developed all along the road to the 7tl1's objectives and these had to be dealt with quickly and under the most adverse operating con- ditions. During skirmishes with the frenzied Red de- fenders, some of the World War II veterans were fre- quently reminded of the frigid Wastes of Attu and the vicious and bitter cold war which the 7th had fought there in 1943 against fanatical Japanese troops.
