ber 29, 1950, the capital had been liberated and the 7th had driven south to link with elements of the First Cav- alry Division below Suwon. For the next week the Divi- sion conducted mopping-up operations, flushing out the last remnants of the stubborn Reds who had lost the prize city. With the Marines, the Division had slashed the rail lines leading north and south from the capital. While the capture of Seoul in itself was only of sec- ondary importance, cutting the lines to the south had denied the Red encirclement around the UN defense perimeter at Pusan of their principal supply lines. The United Nations forces to the south smashed through the Commie ring, killing or capturing thousands of the enemy and forcing the battered remnants of the North Korean Army northward, confused and beaten. Pusan was thus relieved of the strangle hold. The fall of Seoul and the relief of the Pusan perimeter was heartening news to a World which had waited eagerly for good news during a month filled with contrasts. Casualties had been heavy and the fighting some of the most vicious in the campaign southward at Pusan. Members of U. S. Forces lakes no chances keeping enemy covered . vi.
