During our Hrst two months of this undeclared War in Korea, we of the 7th Division had played a sig- nificant role in the sweeping UN operation. The bloody peninsula was no alien land to the Bayonet. On Sept. 8, 1945, the 17th Infantry Regiment flater named the Buffalo Regiment after Colonel William Quinn who was affectionately known as Buffalo Bill J led the other Cp Russell Grail manning clippers-Pfc. Three years later in 1948 the 7th Division had moved to Japan. Thus the September 17, 1950, landing at Inchon was a homecoming for many of the veteran division members. But this time the arrival at Inchon was different. There were no banners to greet us, no grateful citizens waving us ashore. This time the 7th came in LST's and landing barges and poured ashore in battle gear. ing was the first taste of battle. From June, a few days after the conflict had started, until August, the Bayonet Division had been training and re-equipping in the Mount Fuji Maneuver Area. Now, as part of the X U. S. Corps, We were joining the first team and locking horns with the Reds. Our first objective was Seoul, capital of the Republic of Korea and a real prize in this touch-and- go ight. The fight for Seoul was brief but bitter. By Septem- Col. Powell chooses four lucky men to receive packages sent by a mother in honor of her son who was killed while a member of their outfit, the 17th RCT. Plotting fire directions are Cl-rj Capt.
