For the old timers of the 7th- the men who had done battle in the Pacific during World War II, fighting their Way through some of its most rugged campaigns-it was a new experienceg an intro- duction to a new kind of Warfare characterized by gong-ringing, bugle-blaring, screaming, fanatical at- tackers. This frigid War seemed near its end. Two nights later the Chinese offensive was unleashed. During the next five days, youngsters were to become seasoned fighting men. Many were to become heroes. Many more were to die in the freezing cold they had learned to hate. This offensive marked the beginning of one of the most brutal and intensive battles in the Korean campaign. For the newcomers, not yet used to Members of light machine gun Bn. blast enemy held positions.
