To the north, the 17th Infantry Regiment had speared a drive through Pungsan and Kapsan and entered the key Yalu River city of Hyesanjin four days before. It was one of the few units to reach the Yalu and spirits in the Bayonet Division were high. A three battalion task force of the Division had also moved to the eastern shore of the Chosin Reservoir and was settling back for a brief rest. INCORPORATED Two soldiers gaze across the river to the mountains of Nlanclwria. places we've had our hand in since we were activated at Camp Wheeler on December 6, 1917. And I suppose it isn't too strange that a lot of people and even some of our men had never heard of Korea before the shooting started in June, 1950. A lot of people had never heard of Tarawa and Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima, but they know about them now. Anyway, this is our story. This is how we helped out in that stab-in-the-back campaign on that skinny, Godforsaken peninsula called Korea. I guess a man can stand anything if it means ending UN Forces evacuate city of Hungnam Korea. a war and that was how things looked to us on the 25th day of November, 1950. It was cold, with the ground hard as Georgia marble and snow whisking in circles in the teeth of slashing winds. But prospects for victory were bright. The war was almost six months old and just before Colonel Don C. Faithis First Battalion of the 32nd Infantry left Hamhung some of the men had heard a news broadcast from MacArthur,s headquarters in Tokyo predicting that the 7th would be back in Japan for Christmas. This frigid War seemed near its end. Two nights later the Chinese offensive was unleashed. During the next five days, youngsters were to become seasoned fighting men. Many were to become heroes. Many more were to die in the freezing cold they had learned to hate. This offensive marked the beginning of one of the most brutal and intensive battles in the Korean campaign. For the newcomers, not yet used to Members of light machine gun Bn. blast enemy held positions.
