W A cargo nefload of mail swings up and out of the hold of THE CONSTITUTION STATE . The rest of the company occupied the trench and readied to meet the Chinese attack. The night passed but the counterattack did not ma- terialize. Men were Waiting with their nerves on their fingertips. Tempers were raw and every sound brought a challenge and trembling trigger lingers. Instead of an attack, however, the Chinks were content to harass the ridge with mortar and artillery fire. Every two or three minutes a mortar shell would sigh into the UN lines or an artillery shell would cry overhead and rack the hill- side with its explosion. Company G nevertheless spent the night improving positions in the trench, covering foxholes with logs and hugging the ground every time a shell sang out its sinister Warning. By the morning of the third day, company positions along the ridgeline were complete-but they were fully manned only at night. During the day, only a lookout force was maintained along the precarious roost. Lieu- tenant Maddox was confident that each automatic weap- on and every individual rifleman had sufficient ammuni- tion to repel a Chinese assault. Radio and sound-powered phone networks were woven along the entire line and communications were good. With the company also were artillery and mortar forward observers. But no barbed Wire had been laid down in front of the company and its strength was down to 125 to 130 men.
