their line throughout the morning. At 1315 the Chinese came again, driving against both the lst and 2nd Bat- talions. But the 7th turned the prong of the attack back into the Chinese and drove into the face of the on- slaught. By 1425 they had swept across Jane Russell Hill and completed the seizure of their objectives. The 2nd Battalion of the 31st Regiment, meanwhile, had run into trouble. Advancing slowly across the northwest ridge of Hill 598, they had to fight for every inch of real estate. Wounded men toppled down its steep slopes. Bayonets and small arms were thrown into play in blazing gunfights. By nightfall, Weary and tense from the day-long ordeal, the men were stymied by whining artillery shells which ripped into their offensive line. It was here that the 17th Regiment's 2nd Battalion was called into the drive. All along the ridge, units were r Prisoners-of-War move on to transportation to the North and repatriation under terms of Operation Big Switch . ordered to dig in and prepare for a Chinese counter- action. It began at 0130 on 17 October. Company G of the 2nd Battalion, 17th Infantry, was responsible forfapproximately 500 yards in the center of the battalion sector, a frontage which included sec- tions of Jane Russell Hill. Their action in this rugged battle was typical of the struggle for Hill 598 complex. Upon receipt of the battalion defense order, lst Lieu- tenant Thomas H. Maddox, commanding Company G, issued a verbal order for his platoons to brace for pos- sible enemy contact. All three of his rifle platoons Were deployed along the battle-shorn ridge and instructed to dig in. A communication trench, dug by the Chinese, extended in an irregular line across most of the com- pany front. In some places the trench was along the ridge line, in other places it dipped below the line into the forward slope. Two or three men from each platoon were posted on the reverse slope to act as rear security.
