Troops of A Co., 223rd Inf. Regt., 40th U. S. Inf. Div. are the last to leave Heartbreak as they start their trek downward from the well-known ridge control. An hour later the lst Battalion and the 2nd Battalion of the 32nd Regiment crossed the departure line again. The 32nd Regiment had assumed control of the operation. Once again the units faced stiff resistance by the staunch Chinese forces but they inched ahead through a rain of shell fire and by 2300 that night both battalions Were consolidating their advances. The lst had battled its Way into the Sandy Ridge area and there was holding the line. The 2nd was on the side of Hill 598 and digging in to hold its new gains. Grit- ting their teeth, the men of both battalions withstood a terrific night-long battery of mortar and artillery fire and fought doggedly against the enemy bunker posi- tions which were deep, Well-prepared and almost im- possible to dislodge. Reinforced by an estimated two platoons, the Chinese launched a terrific counterattack at 0500 hours on 16 October, preceded by intensified mortar and artillery barrages.
