Its objec- tive was to lure enemy patrols and troops into ambush by cessation of fire and patrolling. The enemy, assuming the UN forces had withdrawn, would then assault and our forces would attack from carefully set-up positions. These actions, with aggressive patrols conducted be- tween Heartbreak and PunchboWl along the Main Line of Resistance, kept the Division busy until our relief. During these constant patrol clashes, various new methods for destroying enemy bunkers were developed, methods which were to become increasingly important in the months to come. Notable among them was the use of direct fire 76 mm tank guns spaced on the ridge lines so that they could be fired across the front line and into the mouths of the cave-like defensive positions and the use of 90 mm anti-tank guns, which were towed into position and used the same way.
