Death was every- where and the beleaguered hill was soon swept clean of foliage, trees and all forms of living matter except the opposing forces which fought a desperate game of own- ership for the vantage point. Equally as deadly but possibly not as important, was The Punchbowl, in its way, as notorious a name in Korea's sanguinary history as Heartbreak But where Heartbreak was a hill, Punchbowl was a hollow. From its sides, the holding force could direct deadly, withering fire into the bowl and run up costly casual- ties on the force which hold this wide, shallow grave of a battlefield. In November, the Division zone was ex- tended from Heartbreak to include the northern rim of Punchbowl and thus the 7th became involved in both these battles. Despite the aid of planes, artillery and napalm, this sector had to be taken and re-taken with flamethrowers and steelg and so during the cold Wounded infuntrymun is unloaded from stretcher at aid station.
