supporting UN forces. The drive to Hwachon did not end the 7th Infantry Division's drive north. From the lst of June to the 23rd, the Bayonet Division continued doggedly to attack the stubborn Communist forces. By 16 June, we were on the outskirts of Kumwha. A week later, 23 June, 1951, the 7th Division was reverted to IX Corps reserve, the first time since entering the War that the Bayonet Division was committed to a reserve status. The assigned mission of the Division was the construction and fortification of a defense line. For nearly two months the men were able to sleep out of earshot of Red guns. The rest was short-lived. In August the Division was ordered into defensive positions north of Hwachon and on the 26th began a bitter, dirty struggle across the craggy country north of the village.
