On 23 April, an all-out offensive by the Reds was repelled and the line Was solidified. On 27 April, Eighth Army headquarters or- dered the 7th to withdraw to the Hangye area in order to straighten and strengthen the UN line. Four days later, on May lst, the Division was ordered to move north again, this time to an area near Chipyong-ni to plug a gap in Eighth Army lines. For 20 days the Divi- sion dug in and held the sagging section then, on 21 Loading rocket launcher as they prepare for action. May, 1951, we flexed our muscles and countered. The attack moved slowly at first but gradually gathered steam. The enemy, fighting bitterly and viciously for every inch, finally was routed. Spearheading the IX Corps UN offensive, the 7th smacked across the 38th once more and drove into the key village of Hwachon, 15 miles north of the Parallel. Thousands of enemy troops were cut off and trapped south of Hwachon Reservoir, there to be either wiped out or captured by Gun crew fires their self-propelled 8-inch Howitzer.
