F W tl wal, i Nr. , Y an In September, 1953, we, the class of 1957, entered high school. No one could have been prouder. We thought our worries were over, but since then we have come to realize that they had just begun. we began our first high school term with Mr. Walter Creel. We nad a rather large class, 40 to be ex- act, one of whom we acquired through promotion, Eula Rose Grady. Our leaders for the year were: Pa- tricia Jackson - President, Linda Sutton - Vice-President, Faye Sutton - Secretary, Gene Crawford - Treasurer. Our representatives to the Student Council were Eula Rose Grady and Patricia Jackson. Faye Sutton represented us in the Halloween Carnival. We accepted an invitation from Mr. Creel to visit his camp at Kennel's Beach. We enjoyed ourselves very much. As sophomores we had Mrs. Atlas Price as our sponsor. We had lost several of our classmates. We chose for our leaders this year Gene Crawford - President, Eugene Smith - Vice-President, Wendell Whitman - Secretary, Patricia Jackson - Treasurer, and Faye Sutton - Reporter. We had two FHA officers this year: Patricia Jackson - Song Leader and Linda Sutton - Parliamentar- ian. The FFA officers were: Eugene Smith - Vice -President and Gene Crawford - Treasurer. We were proud to have Eula Rose Grady to represent us in the Halloween Carnival. Our large class outing was at Gold Park Lake this year. A wiener roast, sun, and swimming were en- joyed by everyone. Our junior year we were beginning to really feel important. Slowly but surely we were approaching our goal, graduation. We were proud to have as our sponsor this year, Mr. Gerald Waters. Immediately after school started, we began to think of ways to make money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. We used the theme of the Old North State. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves very much. Our leaders for the year wereg Faye Sutton - President, Eugene Smith - Vice-President. Margaret Pot- ter - Secretary, Gene Crawford - Treasurer, and Bonnie Parks - Reporter. The highlight of this year was the presentation of our junior play, Grandad Goes Wild . It had twelve characters, all of whom I think enjoyed play practice very much, although it did get tiring. FHA officers for the year were: Faye Sutton - Vice-President and Patricia Jackson -Treasurer. Again FFA officers were: Eugene Smith - Vice-President and Gene Crawford - Secretary. Deane Whaley represented us at the Halloween Carnival. As seniors with our rings and privileges, we had Mrs. Iris Womble as our sponsor. We sold magazines, annuals and ads for the annuals. Our leaders for this year were Wendell Whitman - President, Eugene Smith - Vice-President, Linda Sutton - Secretary, Travis Herring - Treasurer, and Margaret Grant - Reporter. This year our club officers included: FFA - Eugene Smith - President, Kenneth Grady - Vice-Pres1- dent, FHA - l-aye Sutton - President, Patricia Jackson - Treasurer, Linda Sutton - Editor-of-News, and Inez Holmes - Parliamentarian. In the Halloween Carnival we were represented by Margaret Potter. We presented for our play this year Hillbilly Weddin . We enjoyed giving it very much. The juniors gave us a wonderful banquet. The theme was Hitch Your Wagon to a Star. Everyone en- joyed it very much and would like to thank them for it. We have also enjoyed several parties given by our grademothers and the mascots parents. We would like to thank everyone of them. Throughout our four years in high school we have been represented in all sports. Deane Whaley was captain of the girls basketball team in our senior year. All twenty-three of the seniors will be going their separate way another year. We will all miss school I am sure or at least being with our classmates. There is one thing I do21't think we will ever forget, our many days together at dear old Seven Springs! Faye Sutton Historia n 441 7047! I must have fallen asleep . . . Suddenly, familiar sounds and voices were heard. I found myself in the old twelfth grade at Seven Springs High School. Upon entering our old home room, I found some of my classmates of 1957 assembled. I began to look around when a nurse appeared. It was Pa1Iicia Jackson, now a R.N. at John Hopkins in Baltimore. Here is Bonnie Parks, who has a week off from the big Health Center in Tampa, Florida where she is head laboratory technician. Faye Sutton tells me she has learned to combine her career as private secretary to Perry Como and that of a housewife. Here comes Inez Holmes. She is now living in Raleigh with her husband who is teaching engineering at State College. Why here is Jean Edwards who just keeps herself busy taking care of her four children and her husband, L.H. They are still residing at their beautiful home in Richlands, North Carolina. You'll never guess who this is coming in with blue suede shoes and a guitar. Why if it isn't Eugene Smith, now a very popular rock and roll singer. Seems as though he has made quite a hit with the teen- agers. While talking to our twelfth grade teacher, a very attractive model appeared. It was Shirlie Creel. Shirlie told us she had been to school in New York and is now a very well-paid model. Have you seen the latest styles in all the fashion magazines? Many of them are designed by Nora Frances Grady. She just came in dressed very neat as she always did in high school. Margaret Grant seems to be in great shape these days. Guess she stays young looking while working in her gym class at Charlotte High School. Deane Casey has really proved her talents these past years. Besides keeping house Deane has the big- gest beauty shop in Goldsboro. Why this looks like a Texan coming in now. Well, if it isn't Kenny Grady. Kenneth owns a big ranch down in Dallas, Texas. He must be doing real well for he even has that Cadillac he has always wanted. We also have an Army General in our midst. Why it's Gene Crawford. Seems that Gene has stopped chasing girls long enough to settle down. We were presented with corsages as we entered, compliments of Potter's florist, owned and operated by Margaret Potter. She always has a knack for arranging flowers and I must say it was a paying one. Hilda Hancock just got back from the West Coast where she has been on a business venture. Hilda is head buyer for LC. Penney's. . James Herring passed out tickets as we came in. As you probably know, James owns a big chain of theaters. He gets to see all of the movies these days. I hear that Dot Ervin is secretary for her husband's big trucking firm in California. She must be stay- ing out in that California sun a lot, too, for she really has a pretty tan. Here comes Linda Sutton, who graduated from East Carolina College and is now head ofthe English Department in our Mt. Olive College. Coming in now I see Peggy Kornegay, wearinga WAC uniform. Peggy is stationed at Virginia. She has just acquired the rank of Lieutenant. I must say L.H. Rouse has changed in the past ten years. As everyone knows L. H. is the agriculture teacher here at Seven Springs. I heard some of the students say he is real good. Wendell Whitman is now lightweight champion of the world. He acquired the title two years ago and is still holding on. Well, look who just walked in. Why, it's Horance Piner, Ir. He is now an insurance agent in Chicago. Travis Herring is now an engineer with General Electric in New York. He now has that Packard he has always talked about. Oh yes, I forgot myself. I am an airline hostess with United A irlines. I enjoy my work very much . . . Suddenly I felt someone shaking me. It was my mother. She told me I had better get ready to go to school to take final exams. The class divided into two teams-reds and blues. The losers served refreshments at a tobacco typing we had. Margaret Potter, high salesman, won a camera and Faye Sutton, second high salesman, received a pajama bag. Gene Crawford and Wendell Whitman received cameras through a drawing. Our sales ex- ceeded those of previous years. Selling ads for our annual was one of the highlights of the year. We sold ads in Goldsboro, Mt. Olive, Kinston, LaGrange, and Seven Springs. We sold a lot of ads and had a lot of fun, too. The seniors had an ice cream party at the community building in Seven Springs on Friday night, Oc- tober 12, 1956. We all had a wonderful time. On October 18, 1956, we received our class rings. That was one of our happiest days. On October 19, 1956, the seniors sponsored the Carolina Partners. This proved to he a very entertain- ing evening. ' On the day we got out for Christmas, December 19, 1956, we were served drinks, candy and cookies by Mrs. Dan Grady and Mrs. J.D. Daly. On December 20, 1956, the seniors gave their annual play, Hillbilly Weddin' . Those taking part were were Gene Crawford, Patricia Jackson, Eula Rose Grady, Kenneth Grady, Jean Edwards, Eugene Smith, Bonnie Parks, Inez Holmes, Shirlie Wiggins, Linda Sutton, L.H. Rouse,Faye Sutton, Travis I-lerring and Dorothy Daly. Money was taken up by Deane Whaley and Hilda 1-iancock. Ushers were Nora Frances Grady and Peggie Kornegay. Entertainment was provided by Eugene Smith and Wesley Creech. On the 21st of December Mrs. Owen Jackson and Mrs. Ressie Whaley served us at Mrs. Jackson's home. We all had a wonderful time. The seniors were served a barbecue supper at Wilson's with Mrs. E.I. Wiggins paying half and the seniors the other half on February 6, 1957. On March 30, 1957, two of our senior girls attended the FHA Convention at Raleigh. They were Inez Holmes and Linda Sutton. OnApril 5, 1957, two of our girls went to East Carolina College in Greenville. Eual Rose Grady rep- resented us in a Fashion Show and Faye Sutton went with her. On May 9, 1957, the mascot's mothers, Mrs. Ivy Holmes and Mrs. Lucille Dawson, gave the seniors a barbecue supper at Wilson's. We all enjoyed it very much. On Friday night, May 24, 1957, we gave our class night play. The class history was read by Faye Sut- ton. The class prophecy was read by Eula Rose Grady. The last will and testament was given by Eugene Smith. The class poem was delivered by Patricia Jackson. Gene Crawford read the superlatives and Linda Sutton presented all the seniors, mascots, and faculty with presents. On May 26, 1957, Reverend Melvin Everington of Mount Olive College delivered our baccalaureate sermon. His sermon was very interesting and was an inspiration to us all. Reverend C.L. Turpin of Seven Springs gave the invocation and benediction. Music was presented by a choir of high school stu- dents. Barbara Herring was the accompanist. ' At last the big night was here. Our commencement exercises were held on May 28, 1957 in the school auditorium. The address was presented by Professor Frank Fuller of the Dept. of Education of East Carolina College. His talk was very interesting and we all enjoyed it very much. The Salutatory was given by Patricia Jackson and the valedictory was given by Travis Herring. The members of the senior class sang the chorus. Mrs. M.O. Summerlin, the music teacher, was the accom- panist. The invocation and benediction was given by the Reverend Gordon Allen of Seven Springs. Mr. R.S. Proctor, County Superintendent, presented us with our diplomas. 71 gd 4 a as B ,aa '70 Q Nl i Q , 005 ,Tv y Q 'xx 1 -. .P ' , vis I lx 1 5 as ap 0 5 on 7 ' ' We the seniors of nineteen hundred and fifty-seven, wish to re cognize and express our gratitude to Miss Ella Gillerlain, for her twenty years of service as a teacher of Seven Springs School. After many hours of struggle and hard work, plus many headaches, we have completed this book. We could never have met the deadline had we not had the help of: 1. Mrs. Womble, our Editorial advisor. She gave helpful suggestions at times when everyone else was desperate and blank. 2. The staff members who worked with us during their spare time. 3. Charles Kraft, who did a marvelous job on our individual pic- tures for the annual. 4. The patient photographer from Delmar, who took all group pic- tures. 5. All students who were not on the sta ff, but gave a helping hand, and the teachers who gave us time off from class when we fell behind in our work. 6. The advertisers, without whose help this book would never have been possible. 7. The publishers and printers of the American Yearbook Company, who have been so patient and understanding with us throughout the year. 8. Our subscribers, who purchased copies of the annual.
