PENNSYLVANIA lssol THE OFFICE OF THE PREIDENT To the Members of the Class of 1966: Spiritual growth . . . do we mean by this an intellectual development, a richer insight into the world of truth and values, a deeper unity with the others --fellow humans and the material world- -a. firmer hold on God, a progress in holiness? No doubt we mean all these things: wisdom, humaneness, sanctity. How then shall we attain this growth? May I risk an alliterative prescription? I hazard the suggestion that spiritual growth demands three things Qwhich could also be seven or thirty-three or one hundred forty-fourj: it demands contemplation, coping, and confidence. Contemplation . . . One of Scripture's favorite images of personal growth and progress is the growth of a tree: The just man shall flourish like the palm tree, he shall grow up like the cedar of Lebanon Q Ps. 90.131, But it takes time for a tree to grow, and each of us must take time to grow--to be at leisure, to think, to put things together, to contemplate. Secondly, coping . . . Most people who have everything their own way lfew as they are, do not grow to full spiritual strength. Only adversity bravely faced and patiently borne gives a person the toughness and courage of which the tall, straight tree is a syrnbol. Finally, confidence . . . One of adversity's medicinal effects is to cure us of the notion that we can go it alone. Adversity turns us toward God: I am not alone, because the Father is with me UO. 16. 321. For a Christian, spiritual growth ultimately means what St. Paul was talking about to the Ephesians: Doing the truth in love, we may in all things grow up in him who is the head, Christ himself fEph. 4.l5Q.
