K, 11- THE focal point of our lives for four years has been Seton Hill's campus. It took only a few weeks to learn our way through the vastness and complexity of the buildings and surroundings, but, it has taken four years to learn the true value of Seton Hill. Now we realize that these are not merely stone structures or grassy slopes, but material symbols of our lives here. Each place has a special meaning for us. We have prayed in chapel. We have searched the libraries for data for papers, rushed to class from the mail boxes or the tea room. Who of us can forget the ac- tivities in Sullivan Hall: skits for the freshmen, the Cap and Gown Show, dances, Lantern Chain, and finally Com- mencement. Wherever we look a memory is revived-a valuable memory of our lives at Seton Hill. Having recalled each campus scene, quietly we return to chapel-to thank God for the good reaped, for the lasting friendships formed, for the intellectual and spiritual growth attained-and to beg our heavenly Father to strengthen and sustain the spirit of Seton Hill. Saint Mary's, once surrounded by forests stocked with deer and peacock, is the oldest building on campus. The earliest deed for the land on which Saint Mary's stands, was recorded April 7, 1783, when the property was trans- ferred from Matthew Miller to Ludwick Otterman. Otter- man's son sold the plantation in 1814, and it passed through a number of owners, until Major William A. Stokes acquired it in 1850. Finally, in 1882, the title to the Jennings farm, as the site was then known, passed to the Sisters of Charity, where they set up a home. The six-inch key with which Mother Aloysia Lowe first opened the door is inscribed with the legend, I opened not only the door of this house. I swung the gates of an eraf' In its early establishment, Saint Mary's was an academy and boarding school. When the Academy and Mother House were moved to the buildings erected on the crest of the hill, Saint Mary's was for thirty-eight years an elementary school for boys. In 1927 it was inherited by the home economics department. To Sister Victoria Brown the department is indebted for its present modern laboratories. It was she who, in 1942, projected the idea for and expended her personal effort upon the renovation of the old Saint Mary's. SISTER M.
