Greensburg Beeonaes an Elozseqoal fee Memorable among the events of 1952 was the erection of a new diocese with Greensburg as its see and the Most Reverend Hugh Louis Lamb its first bishop. Announcement of this appointment by His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, was made on May 23, 1951. Following the death of Dennis Cardinal Dougherty, Bishop Lamb served as administrator of the Arch- diocese of Philadelphia, and his coming to Greensburg was delayed until January 15, 1952. His installation by the new Archibshop of Philadelphia, the Most Reverend John F. O'Hara, took place the next day in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Members of the hierarchy and the clergy from many parts of the United States participated in the ceremonies. Following the solemn pontihcal Mass, almost eight hundred guests attended the testimonial banquet served in Sullivan Hall. On Sunday, January 20, at a civic reception in the Greens- burg High School, Bishop Lamb was ofhcially welcomed by Pennsylvania's Governor John S. Fine, Greensburg's mayor, William L. Treager, and Congressman Augustine B. Kelley representing the Catholic laity. ' . Seton Hill students welcome Bishop Lamb, grateful for the blessings that will come to us through our spiritul father.
