Such was the philosophy that led Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton to Catholicism, that inspired her to complete dedication to God as the foundress of the Ameri- can Sisters of Charity, that guided the foundation of the edu- cational system which she fostered. Having lived but a few short years, Mother Seton fulfilled a long time. A young widow and mother of five children, she endured the opposition of family and friends who failed to understand her embracing the Catholic faith. With the confi- dence of one whose love for God made all things possible, Elizabeth Seton suffered the hardships and trials of those who pioneer and made a significant and lasting contribution to the work of American Catholic education. Hers was the courage born of wisdom . . . Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. Ours is a rich heritage coming from one whose name is given to this college. To this valiant Christian woman we pay honor, and with Catholics throughout the world we pray that soon we may further honor her as one of'God's saints. 6

ALTHOUGH We have reserved a specific section of the Chevron for the Bishop of Greensburg, and the administration and faculty of Seton Hill, it is increasingly clear to usthat no set number of pages can contain, or even express the range of influence or depth of meaning which their presence contributes to college life. Liberal Arts is more than a Well-Worn phrase at Seton Hill. To us, it means a life which is one Within itself, and in harmony With the World outside. It means a cultured and sensitive mind, a heart full of faith in the future and Willing at all times to help others find that faith, a body trained for gracious living, yet capable of accepting that living for what it is Worth and ,no more, and it means, finally, that all these things are true because the mind and the heart and the body are in con- stant contact with the spirit . .. with Reality, with God. This harmony is sustained, not only in the integration of our intellectual, re- ligious, and social activities, but in our system of communal living. Seton Hill is regulated by a College Government Asso- ciation, composed of students and admin- istration working together so that their common aims may be accomplished in the best possible manner. Not by bread alone doth man live indeed, nor by actions or thoughts or dreams, but by a reasonable blending of all, by every Word of God. dministration His Excellency, The Mos! Reverend Hugh Louis Lumh Firsl Bishop of the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylwznzu
