Nancy Bode, Barbara Counts, Martha Berson and Carol Prost discovered that a Christmas basket was a misnomer, for food packaqes and gifts overflowed into any number of baskets and cartons when H .E A gl Q l nl iw- A 5 R WL, g willing helpers loaded cars December 23. To keep crusaders informed about the mission needs of the church, the CSMC distributed monthly to every girl a copy of SHIELD mission magazine, and along with it a mimeograph pep-sheet with an- nouncements and clever sketches about Seton activities. Six girls who taught catechism at Bethel St. Mary and Mother of God parishes were Mary Lynne and Barbara Phillips, Vivian Kunkel, Joyce Rolston, and Karen Kirby. Sister Mary Bernadette, mission moderat- or, directed their instructions. When holidays approached, volunteers visited homes for the aged conducted by the Little Sisters of the Poor, where, be- sides entertaining, they distributed candy at Thanksgiving and 700 jars of jelly on St. Nicholas Day. On Christmas Eve, 19 poor families were showered with baskets stuffed with turkey dinners, gift packages and clothing. Not all charity was kept at home. For Indian children in South Dakota, books were collected, for China, Christmas cards and stamps, During Lent, sacrifice money was collected during religion classes and sent to the Bishops Relief Drive. Joining other schools in competitions, Mary Lynne Phillips won the city CSMC oratorical finals. Eileen Jones placed third in the mission poster contest.
