T he times have forced us to speak out , to act , and to react as one. As college students we look for leaders within the University. Leaders whom we can relate to and confide in. Leaders whose youth and energy , understanding and response make them worth seeking out. r T We have two such leaders in the Department of Student Affairs . Young enough to discern our needs, human enough to sympathize with us, and experi- enced enough to guide us 9 Mr. Edward Manigan and Mr. William A. Smith move as we do. It was an overcast and threatening October day well-suited to the cheerful and respectful artificiality of the occasion. It was an unreal day as the University dressed itself up out of season. The putting out of flags the setting up of chairs on the lawn and the ceremonial ringing of bells is usually done only once a year in springtime to impress those present on commencement day. But it was fall and all involved made an effort to afford the proper amount of pomp and circumstance to an old friend made new president. Normally anonymous trustees , red-robed right reverends , officious politicians and mid- dle aged alumni paraded. Faculty sacrificed a day off to don alma mater ' s colors. Students who usually disdain wearing socks suffered through the afternoon attempting decorum in caps and gowns. High sounding rhetoric officially greeted the new president. In a fitting gesture , New- ark ' s new Black mayor , Kenneth Gibson , was awarded an honorary doctorate. The arch- bishop officially conferred presidential au- thority on Father Fahy. An unceremonious man, Father Fahy endured the afternoon nervously. When the time came he spoke softly and briefly about Seton Hall and rele- vance. Formality was then forgotten as the evening dissolved in a gala banquet and the next morning brought business as usual once again. THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND 31 HOMECOMING i ( 33 34 35 U.N. Rookie head coach Ed Manigan and his well-drilled gridders recorded impressive victories over Iona, American University and Fairleigh Dickinson before a powerful Georgetown varsity wore down the smaller Pirates and gave them their first taste of defeat. As the games wore on, the season’s hopes were focussed upon the final game, a grudge match against third-ranked St. Peter’s in Jersey City. The mud was no obstacle as the Hall grimly set out to avenge the previous season’s loss and salvage 1970. 148 T J k The total physical and mental commitment which playing football requires makes the exultation after a decisive victory all the greater. The win at St. Peter’s was unparalleled in Seton Hall football annals. A successful college football program requires hard work and determination. The players must have speed, strength, drive and courage. It was a successful year at Seton Hall. % BASKETBALL There was even more optimism than usual as the basketball season opened. New coach Bill Raftery had most of last year’s team and a couple of promising sophomores to work with. 155 The optimism proved premature as the Pirates first three games landed in the loss column. It became evident that the schedule was going to be overpowering once again. Then a serious injury sidelined senior co-captain Mel Knight for most of the season. 157 Coach Raftery tried to make his players know what to do and a gutsy sophomore named Caffrey tried to run through a couple of walls. 159 The Penn State game tells a lot of the story of Pirate basketball this season. The smaller Bucs battled behind their determined co-captain, Gary Cavallo, and their talented forward, Ken House, only to lose on an overtime buzzer shot. 160 161 Raftery tried to match his players’ enthusiasm. He succeeded and then some, making few friends among referees, but a lot among fans. 163 With Knight out of the lineup, the Hall leaned rather heavily upon the burly shoulders of junior Ken House. Playing head-to-head with genuine All-Americans, House always proved equal to the task. 1 «§Sll|I V PSP . J mmm fEh- Tr wli II - Jinii a. 165 168 Next season promises to see Seton Hall back on the road to basketball success under Coach Raftery. But some deserving people will miss the fun. Knight, Cavallo and Bill McCrea have played their last game for the Hall. They deserved a winning season. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, who’s face is marred with sweat and blood, who strives valiantly yet errs and falls short of his mark time and time again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; who feels the great devotions and the great enthusiasms, who at his best knows the joy of victory and who at his worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly; so that his place shall never be among those cold and timid souls who have tasted neither victory nor defeat. — Theodore Roosevelt SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS CLASS OF 73 EILEEN CAHILL Secretary TONY NAZZARO Treasurer THE FRESHMAN CLASS EXTENDS ITS BEST WISHES TO ALL THE GRADUATING SENIORS BEST OF LUCK TO THE CLASS OF 1971 FROM THE Brothers of DELTA SIGMA PHI SINCERE BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 1971 from the brothers of SIGMA TAU GAMMA The Editors AND Staff OF THE 1971 GALLEON CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CL ASS OF 1971 — - ' ' ' 1 =v; uSKK SBM from the sisters of Sigma Theta Sigma COMPLIMENTS OF ■ MR. After many, many late nights and much hard work, we’ve finally reached the end of the line. The editor would like to thank Father O’Leary for rendering his invaluable assistance as moderator, Rich Morris for his pictures of Peter Nero and his advice in the early goings, and Mr. Keefe, the University Sports Information Director, for all his help. Special thanks are extended to Greg Riley and Jim Schmidt for their hundreds of pictures and for their long hours of darkroom work. Special thanks also go to Chris Brosnahan for his pictures of the Paterson campus. To my right hand, my freshman “whiz kid” layout editor, Bill Nourse, a special debt of gratitude is expressed. His knowledge, experience and patience were instrumental in the production of this book. To Mr. Martin Arenson, our portrait photographer, and Mr. Thomas Everett from Rae Publishing Co. much appreciation is expressed for being two tremendous One final word of thanks goes to my editors, staff members and all those associated with the production of this book for making my tenure as editor of the GALLEON a very enjoyable and fulfilling experience. individuals to work with
