Since we were born men have conspired to fashion a time called peaceful. Their time of peace has been characterized by: Vietnam Ussuri River aos Chicago elgian Congo etroit Berlin Crete Algeria Tibet Cuba Newark Korea Hungary Selma yprus Dallas idonderry lovakia written in terms of battles— their strategies, their results, their heroes, their victims. Man has wasted his Man-ness on schemes based on greed and self-esteem. The resulting balance of terror has raped a once beautiful world. Now men have grown tired of their insane behavior. People clamor for an end to a war. The Liberals weep for peace. The Conservatives rage for it. Protesting students have incurred the wrath of an “older and wiser” generation. The protesters are called Unshaven, Communist, Irreligious, Dirty. Just what has that got to do with the protest? The silence of everyone else has not accomplished anything anywhere. Complacence towards an acknowledged wrong is not a fitting response from the human spirit. That human spirit has an urge to build. Man can make things under the most threatening circumstances. Instinctively he moves to overcome an oppressive situation. Yet the creative flame which wells up from within is much more satisfying than the response to the flames which threaten from without. On occasion we are able to drive back the worldly pressures; the strength of two is not easily broken. The threats from the outside having been deferred, the barriers between us dissolve ■TV T r If J ' • v ' ' 4 Jfflggp n- . • Vi •- . :i in the face of honesty and a shared experience. Attuned to each other, we find joy in becoming as one. This basic contact of one with one stands as a model and foundation for the larger, more complex, more brittle relationships that make up the world. • t vaww k • _ _ k . That development can only take place when we can hear ourselves over the noise and see ourselves through the smoke. That time is full of light and life. No longer afraid to open our eyes, we can regain sight of the beauty that can be found in this place. THE SENIOR CLASS 18 Commencement Day is the goal of four years of work. For some it marks the end of a nightmare , for the rest the beginning of their dreams. 19 20 FRANK JOSEPH ADORNA B.S., Mathematics Education CHRISTOPHER GEORGE ALEVRAS B.S., Accounting VINCENT EARL ALTIERE B.S., French Education DAVID JOHN AMBROSE B.S., Accounting JOSEPH JOHN AMABILE B.S., Marketing 21 JAMES F. The hectic pace set that afternoon made the rest of the year seem like a jog. The following pages offer some views of the events that brought us to and followed upon the year ' s initial confrontation. 158 The immediate cause for alarm was explained at a mass meeting to be the President’s Convocation Speech and the ensuing publicity it received in the area newspapers. The meeting drew the usual assortment of people looking for a party. 159 By the next afternoon the issue had been substantially enlarged to include just about everything that could be found wrong with the university. A series of unanimous decisions by the Student Senate set up the mass meeting for later that day. Having had little experience in matters of this magnitude, the students did feel a great deal of pressure. Some began to wonder just what was going on. 160 Some people still could not figure out what was going on. At the meeting it was explained that if the administration would not come to the students, the students would go to the administration. 161 So it was. 162 Students wound up sitting across the table from the Acting President. Everybody asked their questions ; their questions were answered. People are still trying to figure out what went on. And why. THE WAITING GAME One of the favorite activities engaged in at Seton Hall is waiting on line for something or other. Generally these lines are without end and without motion in a forward direction. However, when the line does manage to move forward, it usually moves forward to a sign which reads “Out to Lunch.” “I’m sorry but we can’t help you until you you have been cleared by the Bursar’s Office. Next.” “I’m sorry, but our records show that your bill has not been paid yet. Next.” 164 “I’m sorry but you can’t have your class cards until you go and see Miss O’Donnell.” And while we were in the mood for waiting for things , CONSTRUCTION of the new dining facilities went on for months. 166 ;-4v. 167 By February ; five months behind schedule , the “ Rainbow Forest” was ready for operation. 169 The public debate between MEYNER and CAHILL Meyner and Cahill discuss the groundrules for the debate. Destroying everything in their path, clogging the way with their massed, hairy, multi-colored figures. Our forces could only put up defensive actions; having cleared the path of villagers our outnumbered defenders were driven back to our fortress.” A splendid time was had by all. 216 217 THE PATERSON CAMPUS Major improvements in the physical appearance of the students ’ activities areas have given the campus a slight boost out of its ‘ orphan ” existence. 219 WARM WEATHER GAMES The pitch of activity rises rapidly as the temperature climbs. 220 Boland Hall patio — known as “The Pit” during the water-ballooning season. NIGHT is a daily visitor to Seton Hal Ts campus , except it doesn’t come during the day — because it comes at night. Night came twice on March 7 when the Sun and Moon worked their show . Although this solar eclipse did not reach the spectacular totality we saw on television , it still 224 fascinated all of us. The methods of viewing varied from the naked eyeball method to the old hole-in-the-cardboard trick. Upon reaching the line , the faces disappear and the game becomes one of immovable force against immovable force. 273 The game is simple: the offense must move the ball; the defense cant let them. above: Jim Scheick above right and far right: Joe Tesei right: Frank Einhorn 274 275 Glenn Boyle, Doc Mooney and Bill Looney combine to grab the ball, and an arm. O J C7 278 279 SQUASH RACQUETS 280 281 TRACK The Longest Season The runner runs from September to June. The Fall brings the lonely pains of Cross-Country. Winter and Spring bring the noisy violence of packed arenas. 282 Dan Traficante and Tom Winters head into the hills on one of the nation’s toughest courses. Van Cortland Park in New York. 283 The start at Turtle Back Reservation, the Pirates’ home course. The coach said, “Take it out hard.” 284 Howie Cox yells at Winters to stay relaxed. “Relaxed at five miles. Right!?” Matt Swit found unexpected company on Van Cortland’s Cemetery Hill. 285 Millions of trees and leaves , and an oeeasional passing runner are the only company the cross-country runner has. 286 clockwise from far left: Dan Traficante, Greg Nowell, Nowell and Jerry Figurelli, inters, Sean McGorty. The shorter distances and increased speed couple with the eager crowds to produce a season of a different sort. Throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons the controlled explosion of speed is the thing to watch for. Winters, Nowell and Swit ran legs on the two-mile relay in the Knights of Columbus Meet in the Boston Garden. 290 above: Dick Schneider burned up the Tartan track at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym with a 6.2 clocking in the 60 yard dash. The action took place during the meet with Princeton, Fordham and N.Y.U. left: John Weiss blows past his competitor from Princeton in the 600 in the N. J. Collegiate Championships. He won his heat and his time placed him fourth overall. 291 FENCING The fencers added another impressive year (9-3) to a fine overall record. 292 BASKETBALL Back to the Garden with a running start Hopes ran high and the Pirates launched a running attack as the ’69-’70 season began. Junior Mel Knight leads the fast break downcourt. Red, white and blue Seton Hall jerseys were seen on the court of Madison Square Garden for the f irst time in nine years. The passing of Captain Ken Moss, Gary Cavallo’s aggressive all-around play and the speed and shooting of soph Frank Cortes sparked the Bucs over Lafayette. 295 Seton Hall 95 — Wagner 75 ★ Seton Hall 103 — Loyola 90 ★ Seton Hall 88 — Lafayette 78 Murray State 90 — Seton Hall 81 ★ The going gets tough It was evident early that the shots weren’t coming easy. Cortes, Knight and Cavallo performed their airborne acrobatics. Sometimes the ball went in, but as the season wore on, more often it didn’t. 296 Fordham 70—Seton Hall 61 ★ St. John ' s 83—Seton Hall 64 St. Peter ' s 117—Seton Hall 85 ★ Seton Hall 76— Miami 69 ★ The merciless schedule pitted the Bucs against one big strong foe after another. Knight tried to rise above the taller timber. Ron Wood and Cortes, two of the Hall’s five sophomores, were forced to gain experience while in the thick of battle. 297 Seton Hall 56— Texas 55 ★ Penn State 61—Seton Hall 52 ★ Georgetown 88—Seton Hall 80 ★ Seton Hall 64— American Univ. 63 ★ The subtleties of a non-contact sport The strain towards excellence does not always bring a tangible reward. Board play usually meant agony for the mismatched Pirates. 298 Iona 89 — Seton Hall 76 Manhattan 93 — Seton Hall 88 Seton Hall 60 — Hofstra 58 L.I.U, 66 Seton Hall 5o JgM Behind in the odds, the Pirates were forced to capitalize on every edge they could gain. A half-step on his defender gains Knight a driving two-pointer. Moss, a 6-1 senior, added rebounding strength with his cagey infighting. A graceful leap by Cortes ended in a tangled heap in the photographer’s lap. 299 Seton Hall 83 — St. Francis 78 Holy Cross 107 — Seton Hall 102 St. Bonaventure 103 — Seton Hall 83 S.eton Hall 83 — Boston College 71 Catch it, if you can. Knight and Moss snag a loose ball. Chris Zier follows the arc of his hook shot. 301 The hold of the past Every move by a player and every bounce of the ball, in this and nine previous seasons, led, however minutely, to Richie Regan’s decision of resign. The hope for the future Regan’s legacy to his successor is a team barely touched by graduation. Bill McCrea, a junior, and Cortes, a sophomore, should contribute heavily in games to come. Ken House, however, shines brightest on the Hall’s horizon. House started his first varsity season strong and looked better and better as time went on. 303 WRESTLING Pirate wrestlers fought their way to a . 500 season . the first step on their road to the top. Jim Kushner takes down and finally pins his Monmouth opponent (bottom, right). Bob Shemz gets the glad-hand from his teammates after p inni ng his opponent. 304 Ernie Summers piles up riding time in a match in Walsh Auditorium. 305 GOLF 306 307 TENNIS starting above and following clockwise : Don Cardone, Co-Captain; Charles Jantell; Jim Jeglacowski; Jim Ambrose, Co-Captain. 308 M 309 BASEBALL Jack Donovan hurled an opening day win against Providence. Mother Nature ' s early spring “ blizzard ” only postponed the Pirates ' assault on another NCAA Tournament bid. Already strong in pitching , the Bucs looked for some added punch at the plate. 310 Gary Cavallo looked to improve on a fine sophomore record 311 Action was always fierce around the bases. (above) A Providence runner was out trying to score on a wild pitch. (right) George Garcia swiped second on this pitch and later scored standing up. On deck batter Ron Dolan, number 5, poked the next pitch over the right field fence. (jar right) John Thurston went high to snag a pick-off attempt from catcher Steve Boryczewski. 312 313 ! f I f 314 In one of last year’s most exciting plays, Donovan tagged this Wagner runner out at the plate. Upon rising, the runner was heard to mumble something about getting the number of a truck. 315 THE 1970 GALLEON Editor-in-Chief — Richard Morris Executive Editor — Richard Thoennessen Business Editors — Herb Star ton.
