However, by the time we began cob lege, our personality had reached the stage of development where it was possible to examine this involvement with a certain degree of maturity and responsibility. And this crucial time, of structuring one’s place in the world, forces the mature person to consider his personal values and goals. Seton Hall has, for the past four years, furthered these ideas, these views, and these hopes. Four years of the student’s life were shaped and molded by Seton Hall. She has helped us to better understand the world in which we live. She has as- sisted us in becoming involved in the genuine and sincere change which is now so prevalent. Perhaps today, upon graduation, we should consider our activity as only beginning. Through the years of maturity and responsibility, the uni- versity graduate will be able to look back and further understand the ideas which were introduced to him. Perhaps we shall then be able to comprehend what it really means to be involved in life. DEDICATION “No man is an island,” wrote John Donne. We are all related — all men are interdependent. “Each man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.” I am involved! The human community and the full human personality become the es- sential characteristics of life. The university student cannot limit the focus of his college experi- ence to an academic career, in any one specific area. It is the task of the university to develop the entire personality of the individual, so that he realizes his communion with other men and with the world about him. Perhaps the most important task of the university student is to learn what it means to be human. We must not become involved exclusively in a career, either at Set on Hall or in life. Our task is to be involved in life itself. The truth of our existence, of our humanity, is then found in the meaningful union that ripens be- tween us and our fellow men. To search and to find a meaning in this relation to others — it is to this task, to this search, to this ideal that we dedicate this book — we dedi- cate this book to the idea of involve- ment in life. XII THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY The Most Reverend Thomas A. Boland, S.T.D., LL.D. Archbishop of Newark President The Most Reverend John J. Dougherty S.T.D., S.S.D., L.H.D., LL.D. Stoutenburgh LL.D., K.S.G., K.M., K.G.C.H.S. Clarence C. Walton, Ph.D. Archbishop Thomas A. Boland is a man known personally by only a few members of the Seton Hall family. Yet, as Archbishop of Newark and Director of the Board of Trustees of Seton Hall University, his influence reaches the men and women of Seton Hall each day of their academic and spiritual lives. Archbishop Boland’s covenant with the students of Seton Hall may not be a visible one, but in his role as Shepherd of our Academic flock, the covenant is spiritually present and witnessed daily. THE AD MINISTRATION The Most Reverend John J. Dough- erty; President of Seton Hall, Pastor, Educator, and Friend. There are no words to convey the debt of gratitude which the Seton Hall Family has for this eminent man. He was with us when we needed friendship; he was our guide when we were in need of direction; but most significantly his thoughts and prayers were with us every moment of our careers at Seton Half. When he was consecrated Bishop in 1963, his Excellency’s words were not, “I have been blessed,” but rather “we have been blessed.” This is a typical expression of the Bishop ' s enduring covenant with the men and women of Seton Hall. His love, his friendship, his understanding shall be forever carried and honored in the hearts of his students. Very Rev. Msgr. EDWARD J. Service fraternities and profes- sional groups perform a two fold function. They are important not only for social development but as a catalyst in the shaping of one’s perspective and responsibility. It is the aim of the university to develop the entire personality of the members of its community. Fra- ternities and Sororities are quite important to the university in their contribution to the development of the whole person. In fraternal life the social aspect of the individual is molded by his own peer group. The members of these organizations are afforded the opportunity of be- coming involved in many social events and these social events in turn serve to complete the education of the university graduate. Clubs add immeasurably to the pur- suit of any academic endeavor. Book learning, that which produces the stereotype of an erudite professor, when supplemented by rather prac- frontation outside the classroom tical experience or at least by con- atmosphere is a way in which the student may “round out” his educa- tion. The pre-legal club, the science club, the student education club — all perform an invaluable service to the university. It is in such activities that the student can become involved in a truly developing situation. Participation in university life, which encompasses the scholastc, the ath- letic, and the cultural, can be a very satisfying encounter for the student. The election to WHO’S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERI- CAN COLLEGES AND UNIVER- SITIES is an effort by students to honor their fellows for their con- tributions to meaningful, catholic studia. Supplementary activities buttress the material of the lecture hall, fur- nishing the student with the oppor- tunity to venture beyond the limits of theory into the area of practical application. Perhaps the people on the following pages are the most for- tunate of our graduates because, through involvement in the various facets of university life, they have added to their knowledge of the aca- demic, the wisdom of experience. Those deserving of this honor have come to realize that as Theodore Roosevelt put it : “The best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” WHO’S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Carmela Amoresano John Blanchard Joseph Costantino George Simms Eleanor Bates Vincent Bickler 194 Mary Canavan Jeanann Ward Lois Ann Brown William Dowd Ronald Del Mauro Judith Davis Harriet Dzuiban Barbara Shelly 196 Barbara Farese Bernadette Dugan Joan Worden Dolores Rosa Katherine Ann Fischer 197 198 ! For these ac- tivities should be a vital supplement to the heart of the school, the classroom. Such an essential broadening of one’s individuality, beyond the sphere of the academic, prepares him for a mean- ingful response to the social, cultural, and religious aspects of modern life. The participations in campus spirit- ual life, and the reflection engendered by the annual retreat, help form the student’s attitude toward this impor- tant area of personality. Cultural activities, such as the dra- matic productions, concerts, and art exhibits, arouse the interests of many students in fields that they may pur- sue in later years. And the campus social life provides the opportunity for a contact with one’s contemporaries. Such a personal interaction can form the basis of one’s later involvement with others, both in the family and in the community. Through its range of activities, both intercollegi- ate and intramural, the athletically inclined student may complete his educational experience in his own particular sport. This activity, how- ever, must never be considered as an end in itself, but rather should be used as a supplement to the total ed- ucational process, with its center in the classroom. For the facade of a college athlete withhout a corre- sponding intellectual curiosity is as much an illusion as the quick burst of a flashbulb among those who seek light. Seton Hall is a member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Confer- ence and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Varsity sched- % ules are maintained in basketball, baseball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, swimming, soccer, tennis, golf, fencing, wres- tling and squash racquets. For those who lack the natural ability or the time to devote to varsity athletics, a program of in- tramural sports is provided. Touch- football, basketball, and softball leagues are formed, with competition carried on between fraternities, day- hops, and dorm students.
