Archbishop of Newark and chairman of the Board of Trustees at Seton Hall University is a title which sounds rather distant from the title “undergraduate student.” Yet Archbishop Thomas A. Boland is not as removed from us as his title may appear to place him. His task is to lead the spiritual community of the Arch- diocese of Newark. In this role, he is also Director of the Board of Trustees of Seton Hall University. In the latter function his relationship to the student is rarely a personal one — the immensity of his task rather unintentionally assures this. Yet his influence is known. Through his delegates we know him. By the very fact that we are members of the Seton Hall family, we are members of his family. He may speak to us through the voices of his subordinates, but we can be assured that he speaks to each of us personally.

To teach, a man must lead. He must inspire confidence in what he says, otherwise . . . who will believe him? . . . Who will follow him? The idea of a university must also have high purpose. It must not be a place where a person is merely trained. Rather, its purpose must be to make the individual think. To place its students in contact with the Truth, in all its guises. A university which does not inspire its students to seek after knowledge and to desire truth for truth’s sake may live, but it will not thrive. Seton Hall is blessed with a leader who is also a seeker of truth ... a man who has lighted many lamps and dis- spelled much darkness ... a teacher who inspires his stu- dents to follow him because of what he exemplifies . . . a man who is not aloof from his students. He is a man who desires neither praise nor honor for himself, but rather a harvest for his efforts. Our president, our teacher: Bishop John J. Dougherty, President of Seton Hall University. ‘7 cannot think but that the world would be better and brighter if our teachers would dwell on the Duty of Happiness as well as the Happiness of Duty” — J. Lubbock
