GALLEON VOLUME 39 1963 SETON HAU. UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES SOUTH ORANGE, NJ 07079 Seton Hall University South Orange, New Jersey VI A good university is a many splendored thing. She helps her students to discover and fulfill themselves. She does this by introducing the student to the sages of all history, including the great saints, who have dealt most creatively and successfully with those eternal questions of human identity and destiny that each man must answer before he knows who and what he is. A good university prepares her students to participate — no, to take the lead-in an honorable life ' s work. A good university affords even the undergraduate student the oppor- tunity and facilities to do research, to push back the boundaries of knowledge. In most cases the student only extends the frontiers of his own knowledge but if he can do that well later he can extend the frontier of man ' s knowl- edge. A good university provides the occasion for fellowship: sports, dances, rallies and the other events that make up the social calendar of a school year. Seton Hall does all this and we, the editor and staff of the 1963 Galleon, hope that this many splendored activity of a fine university glows in the pages of our book as we hope that it will glow in the lives of her students. FLEMING DEDICATION Seton Hall has flourished for more than a hundred years; she has grown from a small Catholic seminary to a large Catholic University. Many holy men have contributed to her develop- ment. This yearbook is respectfully dedicated to one of these devoted few —The Very Reverend Msgr. Edward J. Fleming. Seton Hal l became part of the life of Father Fleming in 1949, one year before the South Orange college be- came a university. At that time, he was named a member of the faculty; today he enjoys the distinction of being Se- ton Hall ' s first executive vice-president. In fourteen years. Father Fleming has held several significant positions. In 1951, he headed the Department of Student Affairs on campus; two years later he assumed the leadership of University College. With Father Fleming as Dean, the Newark Division nearly doubled its en- rollment; it also witnessed the estab- lishment of the basic professional nurs- ing program and the elementary edu- cation day time curriculum. When Father Fleming returned to the campus in 1960, it was as execu- tive vice-president. Recently, he was honored by Pope John XXIII as a Papal Chamberlain. Monsignor Fleming has received many distinctions: He holds the Sapien- tiae Christianae award for distinguished service in human relations by Alpha Ep- silon Mu Business Society; he is a mem- ber of the National Association of Col- lege Deans and the Catholic Theologi- cal Society of America; he is listed in ' Who ' s Who in American Education ' and ' Who ' s Who in America ' ; he is also an honorary member of Phi Kappa Theta National Collegiate Fraternity for Catholic Men. What can be said about a man who so lives and loves Seton Hall? A man who has given so much of himself to her honor and glory? The Galleon is a symbol of ' Setonia; ' Msgr. Fleming is all that Seton Hall is. We see the two as one. D. E. F. Trustees of the University The Most Reverend THOMAS A. BOLAND, S.T.D., LL.D. Archbishop of Newark President The Most Reverend JAMES A. McNULTY, D.D., LL.D. Bishop of Paterson The Most Reverend GEORGE W. AHR, S.T.D., LL.D. Bishop of Trenton The Most Reverend CELESTINE J. DAMIANO, S.T.D., LL.D. Archbishop-Bishop of Camden Right Reverend Monsignor THOMAS H. POWERS, A.M., LL.D. Right Reverend Monsignor JOHN J. SHEERIN, V.G., LL.D. JOHN J. CONNOLLY, M.D., LL.D. The Honorable JAMES P. MYLOD, LL.D. JOHN C. HENDERSON, K.S.G. HOWARD E. MER ' ITY, Ed.D., LL.D. Secretary The Most Reverend JOHN J. DOUGHERTY, S.T.L., S.S.D. Treasurer Titular Bishop of Cotenna, Turkey The Most Reverend THOMAS A. BOLAND, S.T.D., LL.D. Archbishop of Newark  ,v Monsignor John J. Dougherty, President of Seton Hall, was elevated to the rank of Bishop of the Catholic Church during the 1962-1963 year. This honor came to Bishop Dougherty largely because of personal accomplishments. Yet he himself interpreted this honor as being bestowed on the University and not merely on himself. His constant phrase was We have been blessed rather than I have been hon- ored. This spirit of unity. Bishop Dougherty con- siders the most important attitude a University can foster. In fact, in so far as the various 4 branches and members of the University are united, to that extent the University is a Uni- versity. He has a word for this; he calls it the family. Honor has been bestowed on Bishop Dougherty as we have said, for his personal achievements. But as a humble man, he says that he has merely done his job. He gives a further example of humility, in identifying his achievement as merely one of the manifesta- tions of true University spirit. A great teacher teaches the truth. A great man practices what he teaches. 5 V. Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Fleming S.T.L., Ph.D. Executive Vice-President V. REV. MSGR. THOMAS J. GILLHOOLY A.M. Secretary of the University V. REV. MSGR. Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley, its first ordi- nary, established a seminary for the training of young men for the priest- hood at Madison. The fledgling school, called Seton Hall College was under the direction of the Reverend Bernard McQuaid. The college-seminary moved to its present location on the old Os- borne estate in South Orange in 1860. In 1861, Bishop Bayley made a formal report to the Vatican that a major sem- inary had been established. It is this event that is commemorated at this year ' s centennial celebration. Seton Hall University and Immacu- late Conception Seminary were estab- lished at the same time. The faculty of College and Seminary was basically one as late as 1927 when the Seminary was moved to the newly purchased Mc- Millan estate at Darlington. Even after the separation from the Seton Hall Campus, the Seminary remained close- ly connected to its mother institution; for a resolution drawn by the Seton Hall trustees in June of 1926, when the proposal for the removal of the Semin- ary from the campus proper was first brought up, states that the faculty and student body of the Seminary remain an integral part of Seton Hall. The seminarians at Darlington are enrolled in Seton Hall University and receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University on the completion of the regular four years of college. In the Seminary at the time of the 1862 re- port, ten students were enrolled. To- day the present enrollment is over three hundred. But far more impres- sive than these figures are the statistics on the number of men raised to the priesthood during the Seminary ' s first hundred years. The figure is 1381. This figure includes Bishop Costello, who just this year was elevated to the episcopacy, becoming the first student alumnus of the Seminary to be so honored. 185 187 188 189 ■ CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES 193 The year 1962-1963 was significant for the fraternity system at Seton Hall. The administration finally approved a program permitting the recognition of fraternities. Two fraternities had been recog- nized prior to 1962. Their successful functioning was very influential on those who had to decide on the condi- tions of recognition for any more of- ficial Seton Hall fraternities. Alpha Kappa Rsi is a national professional business fraternity. The Gamma Pi chapter, founded at Seton Hall in 1954, seeks to assist students of business and make them better able to take their place as professional businessmen after graduation. Phi Beta Sigma was the first frater- nity to be recognized by the adminis- tration in 1953. At that time it served as an honorary service fraternity. Last year. Phi Beta Sigma became a chap- ter of Phi Kappa Theta National Col- legiate Fraternity, becoming the first national social fraternity to be recog- nized at Seton Hall. Designated as the Phi Beta chapter, it encourages high scholastic achievement, loyalty and service to the University, and a true Catholic spirit of fraternity. Four fraternities are presently ful- filling a one year probationary period: Tau Beta Sigma, Delta Beta Chi, Sigma Delta Phi, and Tau Sigma Phi. Approximately fifteen other frater- nities are classified as pre-probation- ary. They must satisfy a set of criteria before advancing to probationary stat- us and eventual recognition. An Inter-Fraternity Council was es- tablished to co-ordinate all fraternity activities; it serves as a policy-making body and acts as a controlling influ- ence on fraternity life. All of these criteria will insure a stronger fraternity system at Seton Hall. The Society for the Advancement of Management is the collegiate affiliate of a national businessmen ' s association. The Finance Association, the Economics Club, the Accounting Club, and the Marketing Club, are all concerned with pre-profes- sional training. This training has more than a how to or how much aspect. It is not a repetition of classroom knowledge but the extension of that academic train- ing to the wider area of human relations where all business transactions take place. Perhaps the busi- ness organizations are the only ones of which it can be said that their social activities are their most im- portant functions. These occasions teach prospec- tive business men to respect one another. This is even more valuable than specific trade knowledge. L • ' vX ACCOUNTING CLUB FINANCE ASSOCIATION ECONOMICS CLUB SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF MANAGEMENT MARKETING CLUB 215 216 W WSOU is the Voice of Seton Hall. Significantly, it is almost completely managed and staffed by students themselves. The voice of Seton Hall— the voice of its students. Yet this does not mean that the station ' s programming mere- ly reflects collegiate tastes. The student staff of the station be- gins to realize the responsibilities of a communications medium as soon as the on air switch is thrown each day. The taste of an audience that now covers several states dictates station policy as much as a student manager ' s individual preference. U 89.5 FM 217 YOUNG DEMOCRATS 218 YOUNG REPUBLICANS 219 NATIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION NATIONAL FEDERATION OF CATHOLIC COLLEGE STUDENTS 220 go O U t Political Clubs serve as a vehicle for the expression of student interest in political affairs and for active student participation in actual local, regional, and national politics. The Young Republicans and the Young Democrats provide their members with organizations in which the can develop their respective political philoso- phies. But these national organizations are far more than study groups; they actively engage in the affairs of their parties. In recent years, they have had an increased voice in national party policy-making. Perhaps the most impres- sive example of the power of such groups is the recent influence which the Young Americans for Freedom, a Conservative group, has exercised on the American scene. There is a campus chapter. Two organizations, the National Student Association and the National Federation of Catholic College Students although non-partisan are very con- cerned with the political rights of students. Both are represented on campus. Their members also represent the student body at many national student gatherings. NATIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION The most curious thing about debating and ex- tempore speaking is that their duration — the time in which it is possible to talk or argue— is very tightly controlled. The time allowances often seem quite arbitrary and don ' t seem to take into account that a profound thought takes its own time to formulate itself. Some people will say that the formalism and rules of debating are not established so much to promote pro- found thinking as to encourage facile expression. They will equate the experience debating provides with an older now discredited rhetorical training. Debating disciplines the mind in two ways. The de- bate in its essence demands that every word, every idea be challenged. Usually it is the words, the expression, which are challenged; from the words are stripped all the half-understood connotations that make them inade- quate to express the idea. After this process, the idea can be understood and be either accepted or rejected on its own level rather than on the semantic one. Debating ' s second disciplinary action has even more to do with the element of time. Certain questions must be answered when asked, not later; for to remain silent is to be defeated. The two minutes allowed an extempo- re speaker to prepare his case approximates that very brief time in real life when we have to come to a deci- sion or forever keep our peace. The Brownson Society, Seton Hall ' s debating soci- ety, insists on discipline and precision not only in the de- bating arena itself, but in all the preparations and studies that the debators undertake in preparing themselves for that arena. For this reason they always field a prizewin- ning team. PQ P3 o CO o TRIPHIBIAN GUARD OFFICERS CLUB 222 RIFLE TEAM 223 ELIZABETH SETON STUDENT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION 224 PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLUB The Education Clubs are affiliates of larger pro- fessional teacher organizations. As local chap- ters of these parent organizations, they seek to carry out their group ' s national policies, as re- gards the recruitment of teachers, the question of professional standards, etc. Yet it would be erroneous to say that the Seton Hall chapters merely followed the national pro- grams. They actively engage in the shaping of those programs. Several Seton Hall students have held office in the national parent organizations. Furthermore, Seton Hall, and its Education Clubs, seek to establish and promulgate their own standards. Those are the standards of a thoroughly Catholic education. NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION 225 FEDERATED The main student governing bodies of Seton Hall are the individual Student Councils of the three campuses. Delegates to the student council are elected from the four undergraduate classes, and from student organiza- tions. The function of each Council is to provide an effective organ for the expression of student opinion and comment. The Council serves also as the main liaison between the student bod and the administration, acting as an advisory body within the University, having the right to legislate on 226 STUDENT GOVERNMENT what it considers pertinent to student welfare and to call the attention of the administration to such matters. Within its sphere is included the co- ordination of the various student organizations, over which it exercises a degree of regulation. The Federated Student Government draws its membership from ail three divisions of Seton Hall and seeks to establish relations between the various divisions on the social and extra-curricular levels. 227 STUDENT COUNCILS South Orange ,mr w Newark PROFESSIONAL NURSING 229 Newark Evening Paterson 230 I SETONIAN FILM SOCIETY The Setonian Film Society schedules more than twenty film programs a year. Since this almost saturation exposure to an art form is perhaps only possible with the film art, the content of these programs will have a great deal to do with the mold- ing of the students 7 total aesthetic sensi- bility. The Society meets its responsibility by screening a great many different types of films so that no one taste is reflected or catered to. It even schedules films that are less than masterpieces so that the viewer, having been exposed to a variety of experiences, might distinguish for him- self, the true masterpieces. HIM 01 HI R PIC! It seeks to extend and solidify team spirit and sports- manship by encouraging social fraternity between the players in their off- court hours. The Ski Club exists for no other purpose than to go skiing. That it is a club simply reflects that it is more fun to ski in a group than solo. The Swimming Club and the Basketball Club work on the same pleasure principle. 233 The Book Club is a literary discussion group and as such studies the masterworks of many different cultures. BOOK CLUB MODERN LANGUAGE CLUB Within the Modern Language Club, there are four divisions, one for each of the modern languages — French, Italian, Spanish, and Ger- man— that are taught at Seton Hall. Each division seeks to give its members some acquaintance with the culture and tra- ditions of the country whose language they are studying. The Modern Language Club, itself, seeks to foster an appreciation of our common Euro- pean cultural tradition. 234 PHILOSOPHY CLUB The discussions that take place among the group of students that make up the Philosophy Club are, as to profound ity, somewhere be- tween a formal classroom discussion and brain storming session. Almost any philosophical topic can be brought up, from a problem in the textural reading of Plato to a Freshman ' s per- sonal query What is love? During the academic year, the Philosophy Club also sponsors several public lectures by prominent contemporary philosophers. The Mathematics Club is a small group of mathematics majors who continue their studies in pure mathematics outside school hours. MATHEMATICS CLUB 235 ST. THOMAS MORE PRE -LEGAL SOCIETY COSMOPOLITAN ASSOCIATION 236 BAYLEY REVIEW The Cosmopolitan Association, the foreign students club at Seton Hall, is one of the more recent undergraduate clubs, for until a few years ago there were few foreign students at the Hall. There are now many foreign students at Se- ton Hall. And they are the ones who first saw the value of such a club; they themselves formed it. Yet the reason for its formation is not the one most American students would imagine. It has nothing to do with home-sick- ness or with a desire to form a national clique. Through such an organization as the Cosmo- politan Association, the foreign students feel that they can make their American hosts more aware of the ways of life of their native coun- tries. These students who are learning so much from their encounter with America, would also like to give Americans the opportunity to know them better. They wish a real dialogue. The Saint Thomas More Pre-Legal Society exists to acquaint its members, all of them pro- spective lawyers, with the profession of law. It seeks to make this acquaintance as realistic as possible; the lectures, discussions, and field trips the society sponsors tend to discredit the Perry Mason glamour image of the lawyer and emphasize the down-to-earthness of the pro- fession. Everything that makes up the University— the people, the events, the ideas, the opinions— is recorded in one of three undergraduate publications: the newspaper, the yearbook, the literary magazine. If the students are the heart of a university, the newspaper is the pulse. It transcends the mere recording of facts; it helps shape those facts through dynamic editorial policies. The Setonian has been serving the South Orange Campus since 1924; the Seton Call and the newly created Seton Voice serve the day and evening divisions in Newark; the Hall ' s Echo serves the Paterson Division. The Galleon, the University ' s yearbook, serves the entire University, cov- ering the significant activities of all the divisions, giving them a permanent record. In doing this, the Galleon attempts to preserve the traditions of Seton Hail by putting all of the activities of all the divisions in the perspective of an entire year and of the entire University picture. The creative writings of students don ' t need to be recorded so much as disseminated, both for the development of the University. The Bayley Review, the campus literary magazine, is the needed vehicle for such writers. BAYLEY REVIEW THE SETONIAN 238 NICHOLAS R. To the great majority of the students, the Work- shop is valuable for the evenings of fine theatre that it provides them. When trying to describe the worth of an organization such as a Work- shop Theatre, we should consult its audience rather than its members. The audience both for the fall and spring productions has grown so, that this year an extra performance had to be added to each run. This is significant. 250 251 ALMEGA SOCIETY The Knights of Setonia is not the largest organi- zation on campus. This, despite the fact that there are no dues, no pledging, no hazing— in these ways it is not an organization at all. The only requirement that the Knights of Setonia KNIGHTS OF SETONIA 252 SODALITY lays down is that its members attend the weekly Knights 7 Mass and receive the Holy Eucharist at that Mass. The regulation is difficult because it implies that its adherent live his entire life according to the un- written Knights 7 code that is contained within this simple direction. It is difficult to follow this regula- tion; it is difficult to be a Knight. Difficult, but not impossible. The Knights of Setonia has the potential of being the largest organization on campus. In fact it is the only one that has the potential for universal membership. The Sodality of Our Lady seeks the perfection of its members, the girls of University College in much the same way as the Knights of Setonia. The Almega Society is the organization that furn- ishes and trains servers for all the University reli- gious exercises. Again the emphasis is on service rather than organization. 253 The Scholarship Club is not a club for scholars, at least as it is set up. Rather it exists to raise money to establish scholarships for needy students. Its members may be scholars in their own right, but more importantly and more to their credit, they are students who are willing to work for fellow students who could not fulfill their promise as scholars without fi- nancial aid. SCHOLARSHIP CLUB 254 ACADEMY OF SCIENCE The Academy of Science is a giant among student organizations; the individ- ual sections of the Academy are them- selves often larger than other campus special-interest groups, and the total en- rollment in the Academy is enormous. This is how it should be in the twentieth century. The size of the Academy and the inter- relatedness of its various sections reflect the way in which most of the twentieth century ' s great scientific discoveries have come about— through the labor of a great community of specialists. There is more to this collective effort than its practicality; there is also the hope that all the particular developments of in- dividual sciences can be integrated so that the basic problems of mankind might be solved. Within the charter of the Se- ton Hall Academy of Science there is the explicit aim of establishing a true Academy. The American Institute of Physics maintains a local chap- ter on the Seton Hall Campus. This organization is interested in the continued investigation of the principles of pure physics. The Biological Research So- ciety, is a small group of cam- pus students who work with various members of the Biology faculty on very practical re- search projects. 255 AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS BIOLOGY RESEARCH SOCIETY 256 BOOSTERS CLUB 257 Most of the campus extra-curricular activities, other than the athletic activities, always have about them an element of self-interest. They provide pre- professional training, intellectual stimulus, and, in the case of fraternities, social approval. Not that these are unworthy motives. It ' s just that in some ways they don ' t compare to the outgoing enthusi- asm of the Booster Club and the Cheerleaders. Organized athletics is always a controversial part of college life. It is difficult to measure its value in the same terms that we use in analyzing other extra-curriculars. The one thing that participation in athletics or even in the watching of an athletic event stimulates is that indefinable thing, school spirit. This emotion- al solidarity carries over into every other aspect of college life. So much so that the health of a univer- sity can be determined in the gymnasium. At Seton Hall, the athletic clubs have very large memberships. 258 PATERSON BOOSTER CLUB 259 Who ' s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities 262 263 JOHN PATTON YVONNE CURCIO DONALD FITZSIMMONS, VINCENT LUPO, AND NICHOLAS SCALERA 264 MAUREEN SULLIVAN 266 DOROTHY ZIELINSKI JOHN HARKNETT AND JAMES KUSICK JOHN GOLDEN ROBERT MURPHY DONATO LA ROSA AND CHARLES LISA 268 PHYLLIS CARLINO 269 JOHN MAC EVOY, BEVERLY GRIMM, AND SUZANNE UNGER 270 CATHERINE SCHABERG KATHLEEN VINEIS MARGARET HOENIG AND JEANETTE RIGGIO 271 Queen of The South Orange Campus 273 Queen of University College BETTY ANN NOTHIGER Queen of the Paterson Division JEANETTE RIGGIO 274 Nursing School Fashion Show 275 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President Gregory Domareki Vice-President Michael Guarino Secretary Charles Lisa Treasurer Edward Wyrsch Student Council Representatives John Patton Frederick Petrosino Robert Gaccione FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS President Vincent Bickler Vice-President Robert Schoehaus Secretary William Ametti Treasurer Anton Swihura Student Council Representatives ....
