FOREWORD Some men ' say it is a time for knowing values. But these are men unaware of the time in which they live. For in a cynical age, one neither knows nor cares to know. In a cynical age, val- ues are hard to define and easily debased. In a cynical age, ideals are dead and empty phrases. In such an age and at such a time, will these men, then, suggest ideals, will they mention val- ues? Most likely. They will say that there are certain things which are basic to man, that life is one of these things. And they will claim that there is a right way to live life. Purpose, integrity and justice, humility, charity are not barren phrases but the fulness of life. Such is their story. They will try to con- vince us that first things come first, that religion is basic, that man has responsibility. And they will insist that it is our responsibility to put first things first instead of pushing them aside, to emphasize what is important instead of stressing the superficial, to suggest what is basic instead of obtruding what is secondary. As a matter of fact, in this book they have tried to manifest a sense of responsibility. They have attempted to put first things first, to emphasize what is important, and especially have they tried to suggest that which they claim to be basic. In short, they have men- tioned an ideal and, oh yes, they have even thrown in a value or two. Such were the efforts of unknowing men. A.J.M.
