His Excellency, Thomas A. Boland, Archbishop of Newark, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Seton Hall Univer- sity. The titles alone make him seem remote, aloof. Look at him as a teacher. Simply, the first teacher, the Director of the University. His personal contact with us as students is occasional. We are one child in a large Family. How- ever, he teaches us with a hundred voices, through an articulate faculty responsible to him. Close enough to help, to guide, he sees us as men mature in our choices. He teaches, he counsels us by putting us on our own so that in the process of maturing we know his hand in our work.

% Follow an ideal. Fall in love with this university — not with the build- ings, the books, the campus. But love the men — the men growing taller than the buildings, the men writing the books, the men bring- ing life to the campus. Humility with a proud smile, beaming from a father’s joy in a son’s triumph. Seek it. Casually master a dozen ancient and modern tongues. Com- municate your ideal that your stu- dents might stretch their minds to- wards being imitatorsXf Christ. Mellow this comjDosite with per- sonal magnetism — the man for . all seasons, the President of Seton Hall University, Monsignor John J. Dougherty, Father of the Seton Hall Family. 2
