Faculty Advisor REV. ROBERT FENNELL FOREWORD Some men ' say it is a time for knowing values. But these are men unaware of the time in which they live. For in a cynical age, one neither knows nor cares to know. In a cynical age, val- ues are hard to define and easily debased. In a cynical age, ideals are dead and empty phrases. In such an age and at such a time, will these men, then, suggest ideals, will they mention val- ues? Most likely. They will say that there are certain things which are basic to man, that life is one of these things. And they will claim that there is a right way to live life. Purpose, integrity and justice, humility, charity are not barren phrases but the fulness of life. Such is their story. They will try to con- vince us that first things come first, that religion is basic, that man has responsibility. And they will insist that it is our responsibility to put first things first instead of pushing them aside, to emphasize what is important instead of stressing the superficial, to suggest what is basic instead of obtruding what is secondary. As a matter of fact, in this book they have tried to manifest a sense of responsibility. They have attempted to put first things first, to emphasize what is important, and especially have they tried to suggest that which they claim to be basic. In short, they have men- tioned an ideal and, oh yes, they have even thrown in a value or two. Such were the efforts of unknowing men. A.J.M. VI FOREWORD v CONTENTS DEDICATION viii THE ADMINISTRATION 5 THE GRADUATES AND THEIR FACULTY 17 THE ACTIVITIES AND SPECIAL EVENTS 181 THE SPORTS 281 DIRECTORY OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES 322 vii DEDICATION It has often been the custom to dedicate the yearbook to some outstanding person who fired the imaginations and stirred the hearts of the university’ s graduates . This eminent individual was usually singled out from among his peers because of some merit achieved , some service rendered , or some success attained . It was then deemed most befitting that he should be honored with the yearbook dedication . This year , too , there are members of the university body who have achieved a merit , rendered a service , or attained a success worthy of a similar dedica- tion . But is it truly the desire of the graduating class to honor this particular individual or to extol that particular person? Or , rather , do we wish to express our admiration for a certain kind of person? The kind of person who has been worthy of dedications in the past and ivho will be equally deserving of those still to come . The kind of person of which we speak is easily discernible . Very simply , he is the good person , the man who cares . And as such , he is outstanding . It is difficult to enumerate the reasons for his special greatness or to point out the qualities that make him so. He merely comes upon the scene and one just knows. This is a good man. This is a great man. We have such men on this campus. There are such men in this world. We can only hope that they shall ■-- - prevail. It is our ernest intention to honor these men and , therefore , we humbly dedicate this book to them , to the good men , to the people who care. His Excellency, Thomas A. Boland, Archbishop of Newark, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Seton Hall Univer- sity. The titles alone make him seem remote, aloof. Look at him as a teacher. Simply, the first teacher, the Director of the University. His personal contact with us as students is occasional. We are one child in a large Family. How- ever, he teaches us with a hundred voices, through an articulate faculty responsible to him. Close enough to help, to guide, he sees us as men mature in our choices. He teaches, he counsels us by putting us on our own so that in the process of maturing we know his hand in our work. % Follow an ideal. Fall in love with this university — not with the build- ings, the books, the campus. But love the men — the men growing taller than the buildings, the men writing the books, the men bring- ing life to the campus. Humility with a proud smile, beaming from a father’s joy in a son’s triumph. Seek it. Casually master a dozen ancient and modern tongues. Com- municate your ideal that your stu- dents might stretch their minds to- wards being imitatorsXf Christ. Mellow this comjDosite with per- sonal magnetism — the man for . all seasons, the President of Seton Hall University, Monsignor John J. Dougherty, Father of the Seton Hall Family. 2 THE TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY The Most Rev. Thomas A. Boland Archbishop of Newark President i, s.t:d., ll.d. rk The Most Rev. James A. Essen- tially a late afternoon and evening college, its student body, consisting chiefly of nuns, numbered 321 in 37 courses. Over the twenty-five years more than forty thousand men and women have attended the college either as matricu- lated students and ten thousand have received degrees. Rev. P. Francis Guterl, now pastor of Holy Rosary, Edgewater, was the first dean of the urban college, followed by Msgr. John L. McNulty (later, presi- dent of the University), Rev. Edward J. Fleming (now the University’s Execu- tive Vice-President) and Rev. John E. O’Brien, the present dean. Now totally centered at 31 Clinton Street, the school has had three other homes in addition to the original classrooms at St. Patrick’s A Jersey City division opened at St. John’s School in September, 1937, and later moved across the street to a vacant public school. The Newark division moved to 40 Clinton Street in 1946, then relinquished those quarters to the Seton Hall Law School as it moved to its present site. Along with location changes came curriculum changes. Many of the early students, being nurses, sought bachelor’s degrees to add to their R.N’s. This consequently led to the establishment of the Seton Hall School of Nursing which enables girls to receive both Bachelor of Science and Registered Nurse degrees in a four-year program. The University’s graduate schools in education and business were also settled in the urban divisions until about a year ago when all graduate work was taken back to the campus. This trend toward centralization led to the clos- ing of the Jersey City division last fall. Today University College is a full-time operation offering nursing and ele- mentary education majors during regular school hours and part-time liberal arts, business and education majors in the afternoon and evening. Dr. Maurice O’Sullivan, who has been with the school since its inauguration, acts as Associate Dean during the evening hours. The future holds for University College participation in Newark’s urban re- newal plans through a new, downtown, campus center. However, in the hands of the Board of Trustees and the University Council lies the final decision for University College’s future service to the community. 183 MONSIGNOR JARVAIS A man lived among us, whose humanity warmed the hearts of all who knew him. A teacher stood at the lect urn , whose wisdom and learning engendered a great love for truth in the hearts of his stu- dents. A priest recreated the presence of Christ among us by his genuine holiness and manly virtue. A spiritual guide directed our failing steps and attracted us to the imitation of Christ by his insight and love. A friend gave his heart in sympathy and strength. A brother stood beside his brother-prists to share their joys and sor- rows, to further their ambitions and dreams, to bear them up in failure, to urge them on to success. Not many men, but one man, who in his consecrated devotion to Seton Hall, its faculty, and stu- dents, for forty some years, presented to the world the ideal image of a great son of Alma Mater. “Beatus vir, qui inventus est sine macula, et qui post aurum non abiit, nec speravit in pecunia et the- sauris. Quis est hie, et laudabimus eum? fecit enim mirabilia in vita sua.” (Eccli. 31: 8-9) To this singular person, Very Rev. Msgr. Walter G. Jarvais, we offer this tribute. PATERSON RETREAT Very Reverend Monsi nor Thomas J. Gilhooly Retreat Master SOUTH ORANGE RETREAT Reverend James Verity Retreat Master VON HILDEBRAND A phenomenologist conception of love is a considera- tion of love in the abstract, as something that can be discussed and analyzed. Yet the experience of love is love itself and any quasi-descriptive analysis of love’s true meaning will hardly exhaust the lived experience nor realize it in those who have never been “in love.” Of what value is it then to discuss love in such a way? Precisely in order that the intelligibility we arrive at may serve to make us more aware of the value of the living experience. What exactly is this intelligibility? In a word, it is selfhood in its sheer transcendence over thinghood. But the recognition of such transcendence reveals the self as a reference to another self. The act of love then is a personal commitment to that other self as a unique and irreplaceable value in itself. Self-centered love, or any so-called act of love which takes the other as a means rather than as an end, simply is not love at all. For to regard another self as merely a means to our own satisfaction is not to love but to use. For all that, self-love is essential, but it is very dif- ferent from self-centered love. For how is it possible to love another as ourself unless we actually love our- self? Such self-love would necessarily entail the recog- nition of ourself as being worthy of the love of an- other and consequently as being capable of evoking in another a love for ourself; it enables us not only to love but to let ourselves be loved in return. Furthermore love is a gift; it is the gift of giving. What is given, of course, is ourself, which we love and value because we are loved and valued. Herein lies the nature of love as an active response to value: the response is a giving; the ability to respond is a gift. Thus love is intentional and as such entails the total integration of all our faculties in acknowledg- SPEAKS ON LOVE ment of the uniqueness and beauty of the other as our- self and ourself as other. Being highly intentional, love is highly intellectual and highly affective; but it is not an act of the rational faculties only. We must liberate ourselves from the widespread prejudice which restricts the spiritual to the intellect and the will, for such restriction would do away with the true spiritual character of the human act of love. Nor is love intel- ligible as an exclusively voluntary act. This would im- ply that we can love at will, that love is therefore not fundamentally a gift that is received. Yet the curious character of human receptivity is that it is active, not passive; and that active receptivity which love entails is precisely the act of giving. To receive love is to love. Although love is not desire, desire is a part of love. Love’s desire is to give love, to communicate love, or better to communicate in love, and thus establish a mutual bond of presence or coexistence between the lover and the beloved. This reciprocal interpenetration is love’s fulfillment. Hence the fulfillment of the self is integrated in the fulfillment of love itself which, in turn, is one with the return of love. This desire for unity is, in fact, a desire for community and as such is the basis of human society. In no way is love the passing of the solitary into the solitary. The desire for union certainly does not make love selfish; “far more important than the union is the other.” But the active response to the other takes place in the union itself, in the unique solidarity in which to receive is to give and to possess is to be possessed. It is the love itself that turns desire to joy. Thus happiness is the result of love, not love’s motive. The lover is happy because he loves, and his happiness consists in giving happi- ness to the other. Unless he makes the other happy, he himself is not happy; if he is, he is not a lover. 189 190 i AMADEUS QUARTET i 191 RICHARD J. HUGHES JAMES P. GODFREY Faculty Advisor ALOYSIUS A. NORTON 210 In any free society, the power to govern is derived directly from those governed. How- ever, in regards to a college or university, we find this tempered by the peculiar na- ture of the relationship of student govern- ment to the students and to the adminis- tration of the school. The administration derives its power to govern those phases of the students’ life connected with the university from the individual student him- self, Who relinquishes certain rights of self-determination to the administration upon his enrollment in the school. This is seen to be necessary in order that the ad- ministration may best be able to guide the multitude of students placed under its responsibility toward a meaningful educa- tion. However, only those that deal direct- ly with the education of the student must rest with the administration. Those that are derived or devolve from the outgrowths of university life, the so-called extra- curricular activities, are not only best handled by a responsible student govern- ment, but also relieve the administration of many concerns so that they may more efficiently deal with the core concern, the direction of education. Rarely, if ever, though, does a student government with this responsibility and power spring up simultaneously with the establishment of an educational institution. Rather, it is a slow evolutionary process, whereby the administration gradually trans- fers facets of its executive power to the student government as the latter shows, during its growth, that it has gained enough maturity and experience to enable it to cope with the corresponding responsi- bility contained therein. To a greater or lesser degree, the final stage in this process, at least as regards government on the individual campus, is being reached at each of the divisions of Seton Hall University. The final phase of this, applicable only to a university, the establishment of a student government entrusted with co-ordinating and directing the student activities of the entire univer- sity, has begun its preliminary stages with the Federated Student Government. When all these facets, both campus and inter- campus, have reached the ultimate stage, wherein the power to govern is no longer derived through the administration, but directly from the student, by achieving a rapport with a interested student body, then we shall have achieved what few other universities have, a truly student government. Until that time, however, the councils of the divers campuses will continue to grow in maturity and responsibility, while con- tinuing to act within the one phase that is, or should be, at all times directly derived from the student, that is, acting as the voice of the students in helping to direct administration policy. 211 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS SOUTH ORANGE President THOMAS LYNCH V ice-President JOHN DARCY Secretary WILLIAM BURNS T reasurer ROBERT CARRIERI Student Council R epresentatives WILLIAM KANE JAMES CONNOLLY RONALD ZAWACKI NURSES’ President SHEILA DEVENEY Vice-President NORAH NOONAN Secretary MARVEL KING T reasurer CONNIE McCORMICK Parliamentarian MARILYN MULDER PATERSON President DAVID DUERR Vice-President FRANKLYN KELLER Secretary ANN SCHEUERMANN T reasurer JOHN CLARK SENIOR PROM 214 % p$F r r Tf! It is generally conceded, however, that this should rest crystallized in the symbols of this class unity, the officers and representatives of the respective classes. As the most basic form of student govern- ment, it is thereby the most egalitarian, allowing only these officers as executive body, and retaining all legislative power unto themselves. Conflicts in class government generally arise from a failure on the part of said officers to realize this basic principle. It is their responsibility not to decide what is best for the majority, but to ascertain what is the will of the majority of their class, and, as executive body, see that it is carried out. The eventual realization of this principle, now being discovered by the men elected to positions of responsibility within the classes, will assure a high level of success in future ventures. 219 GALLEON 220 THE SETONIAN Editor in Chief Erecutive Editor Associate Editor Associate Editor News Editor Assistant News Editor Assistant News Editor Features Editor Assistant Features Editor Sports Editor Assistant Sports Editor Copy Editor Photography Editor Business Manager Advertising Manager Circulation Manager Faculty Advisor GEORGE M OFFATT AUGUSTINE J. Fiction Editor ROBERT MURPHY Poetry Editor ROBERT GIMELLO Managing Editor THOMAS DE DEO Faculty Advisor LAURENCE MacPHEE 224 The publications of a university are the rec- ords which a student body makes of their activities during their undergraduate life. They are roughly the same for all institutions: a yearbook, a newspaper, and an undergrad- uate magazine. The yearbook is more obviously a record than the others, and it is by far the most important, in that it is the most per manent record of the significant events and activities of the students themselves and the person- alities who affect them. It has been in the tradition of The Galleon to strive constantly to make this record more significant and meaningful by recording the particular and implying the universal. How far it achieves this is that upon which it must be judged. Because of its division into three branches, Seton Hall has three newspapers, each cater- ing to the needs of its immediate audience as its primary concern. However, The Seton- ian, The Seton Call and The Hall’s Echo are again records, less often considered as such because of a general transient quality, but nevertheless significant because they capture, as they alone can, the spontaneity and im- mediacy of major and minor events, person- alities and opinions which mold the education of the student during his sojourn. Finally, the magazine of the University is also a record; a record of the minds of the students as they synthesize their education, attempt value judgments, and present these in the fiction, poetry and essays that appear in The Bayley Review. And this, by some, is considered the most profound record because it alone indicates the trends and developments of the minds becoming aware of and judging its environments. Each of these records, it may then be seen, offers a significance all its own, one which must be judged in its own light, and one which must be handled with care by those responsible for it, in light of this responsi- bility. 225 226 President JAMES G. SIMMS V ice-President ANDREW B. HORGAN Secretary MICHAEL J. QUIGLEY T reasurer JAMES H. CONNOLLY Student Council Representative . HOMASTT ' GASQUE Faculty Advisor CHARLES C. 7 227 ALPHA KAPPA PSI President V ice-President Secretary Treasurer Student Council Representative Faculty Advisor ROBERT P. KENNEDY david r. Wil son STANLEY C. BURKE, JR. LOUIS IORIO Charles McCarthy WILLIAM J. DOERFLINGER 228 There are two recognized fraternities at Seton Hall, Phi Beta Sigma Honorary Service Fraternity and Alpha Kappa Psi National Business Fraternity. Since its in- ception in January, 1954, Alpha Kappa Psi has striven to prepare college men for a career in business while at the same time extending the sphere of contacts of its brothers beyond the limits of the university. Alpha Kappa Psi’s unique position of being the only national fraternity on campus is being challenged by Phi Beta Sigma which has become a colony of Phi Kappa Theta. The two campus fraternities, then, bear in common the status of a national fraternity. The similarity, however, does not end here. Both fra- ternities conduct a pledge period each semester, both draw their prospective brotherhood from outstanding members of the student body, and both have set themselves a worthy goal. It is in the particulars of these simliarities that the fraternities differ. The Gamma Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi selects the outstanding students of the Business School for brotherhood after a six-week test period to show the interest of the pro- spective brother. This pledge period serves the dual function of affording the brothers and the pledges a chance to become acquainted and of giving the prospec- tive brother an opportunity to prove his interes t in the fraternity, its goals, and its purposes. Membership in Phi Beta Sigma is also by election but prospective brothers are recommended on the basis of student leadership, participation in extra-curricular activities, and a sincere desire to make a positive con- tribution to the University. These candidates must pass critical analysis by a Board of Review and undergo a nine-week pledge period. Pledging again serves a two- fold purpose: it enables the pledge to prove conclu- sively his interest in the fraternity and its activities and it provides an opportunity for the brothers and the pledges to become acquainted. The primary goal of Alpha Kappa Psi is to encourage special attention in the professional fields of finance, accounting, and commerce and to give the general pub- lic a closer insight into the complexities of the modern fields of Business Administration. To this end it has established an annual program known as Career Day. The goal and spirit of Phi Beta Sigma, on the other hand, is one that is expressed most aptly in the frater- nity’s motto — “Honor, Service, Brotherhood” — with an emphasis on service. Since 1954, Phi Beta Sigma has assumed responsibility for taking attendance at campus retreats; ushering at Commencement; assisting the staff of the Print Shop, the Director of Student Affiairs, and the Director of Special Events; and fulfilling mimeo- graphing and administrative needs of the clubs. Prob- ably its greatest contribution to the field of student serv- ices is its annual Tour Program inaugurated during the summer of 1961 for the purpose of providing in-coming Freshmen with a basic knowledge of the University, its programs and activities. It should also be remem- bered that it is from their ranks, generally, that the future leaders of our country will be drawn, that the future policy of our nation will be directed. The clubs mentioned forthwith are clubs that have newly arisen, or have been re- activated during the past few years. The newest of these, the Young Democrats and the Young Republicans, are the first sign of an active interest in practical politics among the students of the campus. As groups interested in partisan political ac- tivity, they are a recent innovation, and it is generally conceded that their birth was instigated by the formation of a campus chapter of The Young American for Free- dom (YAF) which has grown in little over a year and a half into one of the most active groups on campus, bringing such speakers as George Sakolsky, Rev. Fr. Hu- bert Clancy, William Rusher and other prominent spokesmen for the conservative position to the campus. They are joined in their efforts by the Setonia Conservative Club of the Newark division, which has, among many accomplishments, shown the film, “Operation Abolition,” to many par- ish and veteran groups. While the latter organizations encompass a philosophical approach to all political matters, there has also been a reactivation of one organization interested in studying a particular aspect of political affairs: The International Relations Club (IRC) which seeks to examine all aspects of the ques- tions arising from our relations with the world community. On a theoretically different plane are two national organizations in which our entire student body is represented. Both of these are valuable to the extent that they give students an active experience in determin- ing policy stands. T he first of these, the National Federation of Catholic College Students (NFCCS) is interested primarily in the role that the Catholic student will play in the world into which he must step upon graduation. It is extremely valuable to those students participating in giving them an idea of the role of the Catholic citizen. Seton Hall has become very active in NFCCS, notably by having had two of its students elected to national offices, and having sponsored such resolutions as one calling for a condemnation of Russia’s re- sumption of nuclear testing, at last sum- mer’s national convention. The second of these organizations, the United States National Students’ Associa- tion (USNSA or NSA), is valuable to the Catholic student in showing the general trend of the secular mind, which is pre- dominant among the quarter of the na- tion’s schools represented in NSA. While many of their national policy stands (sup- port of Fidel Castro, abolition of the House Un-American Activities Committee, sup- port of the Freedom Riders) are still being hotly debated on campus, and while the campus has withdrawn at times from na- tional policy stands, there are still those who believe that membership in NSA is a valuable preparation for the student leader. Whatever the trends of thought in these various organizations, it should still be remembered that these are the thoughts that will shape our future as a country, thoughts that are held in the minds of the citizen-student who has been re-awakened to his involvement in the world about him. To the “modern,” science is often an eclecticism derived from Sunday supplements and a “less work for mother” motto. The shallowness of this is frequently opposed by a majority of the rank and file of the University’s science clubs. A member of the Philosophy club would object to the overly physical and almost selfish orienta- tion of such an idea. He would point out the futility of basing everything on a utilitarian foundation; rather, since his interest — Philosophy — is the “queen” of sciences, he would know at the very start that one attains little without a great amount of idealism. The so-called material benefits of our civilization come not just from science but from its underlying philosophy which prods applications into being. This young philosopher would also disagree with many in the Mathe- matics club who seem to enjoy attempting to prove what Philosophy considers self-evident; Modern Algebra seems rather embarrassed over its few basic as- sumptions and daily tries to lessen or even “prove” them. Yet a member of the Academy of Science in any of the divisions would retort to the philosopher and ask of him what he has produced. Such a controversy would prove all the more the need for a balanced view of the goals of the Sciences. All the views expressed are at times valid but they are not equally important. The whole problem rests in the hierarchy of values. In a Catholic University, students are lucky enough to know what this goal is not, namely the perfection of man for his own sake. Instead, science is our means for a better seeing of our relation to the Almighty and thus a means for man’s salvation. This very vague yet ultimate goal for which the clubs are striving obviously synthesizes all previous partial goals and still leaves much room for development. 239 SOUTH ORANGE t MJ President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Student Council Representative Faculty Advisor THOMAS BREWSTER THOMAS McFADDEN ROGER BURNS KENNETH TKACHUK LEONARD E. Guest speakers, symposiums, films and field trips are used primarily to acquaint the s tudent with and give him insight into the complexities of today’s business com- munity. A secondary facet of such activities is a feeling of familiarity and self- assurance which is so vital in a field where personality more than ability is often the keystone of success. The following are the representative business organizations of Seton Hall: the Accounting Club, Marketing Club, Society for the Advancement of Management, the Finance Association, and the Economics Club. By their participation in these organizations, the business students carry away from Seton Hall not only ele- mentary business theory but also sound moral ideals whose application is just as important in the world of commerce as it is in the course of one’s personal life. The value of these clubs extends far beyond the four years at Seton Hall lessons learned here are instilled in the student for a lifetime. HENRY CLUB FRENCH With the Modern Languages being an important part of any Liberal Arts cur- riculum, it is unfortunate that the language clubs are having a difficult time. The three language clubs at Seton Hall — the French Club, Spanish Club, and Russian Club — have occasionally shown some signs of reviving; however, nothing really concrete has ever been accomplished. Either membership was too small or the club officers were hampered in their efforts to conduct an adequate program. Two of these clubs now exist in little more than name and yearbook picture; the other, the Spanish Club still continues its planning, hoping for the day when sufficient interest will be shown to attempt an active program. The inactivity of these clubs is truly unfortunate when compared to the im- portance of language in our day-to-day lives. Words are the “atoms” of languages and the building blocks of ideas. In a world that is becoming as easily accessible as ours, the understanding of formerly distant lands has become more necessary. To understand truly a foreign nation today, an understanding of its total per- sonality — its traditions, its past, its culture — is imperative. Although it would be impossible to gain this total insight into a land by being a member in one club, it is possible to gain a start here. 247 VARSITY CLUB President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Student Council Representative 248 Faculty Advisor TED FIORE MANNY DALHAUSER PHILIP CATANZARO MICHAEL GELTRUDE MICHAEL MURRAY REV. From the quiet destruction on the chess board to the raucous enthusiasm that springs from the Ski Club, there is an athletic event for each of the fans. The Varsity Club is the nucleus of the participating athletes. It is the athletic club. GOLFREDO SANSALONE The Reserve Officer’s Training Corps of the United States Army exists for the purpose of developing officers — leaders of men. Its mission is to train a corps of educated, combat, ready leaders for our nation. The Military Department of Seton Hall University was first established in 1893. It was suspended at the outbreak of the Spanish- American War in 1898 and did not return to the South Orange Campus until 1950. Since then the ROTC program has been regarded by the University as an integral part of its overall educational system. Experience has demonstrat- ed that the leadership qualities accrued from ROTC training are of value in civilian enterprise as well as in the military, that such qualities are important not only to the military officer but to the formation of the entire man. Thus in its broad application, the ROTC has a civic and academic as well as military purpose. Participation in group activities is essential to the development of the individual. Cadets are encouraged to participate in either of the two military organizations within the ROTC, the Pershing Rifles and the Tri Phibian Guard. The raison d’etre of these organizations is to develop the highest ideals of the military profession, and to increase the degree of military proficiency among its members. Their desires coincide with those of the ROTC: to produce a quality American. KNIGHTS OF SETONIA Commander LEON LEWANDOWSKI Spiritual Advisor MSGR. WALTER G. The former of these two organizations is composed of students of nursing schools in hospitals, colleges, and universities throughout the state while the latter is made up of students in the General Nursing program at University College. The Professional Nurses’ Association was reactivated in 1958 for the purpose of providing an opportunity for its members to become acquainted, to share aca- demic experiences, and to attend social functions. It provides for its two hundred members a wide variety of social, spiritual, and cultural programs. The New Jersey State Student Nurses’ Association, being a state- wide professional organization, has a somewhat different function. This organization affords an official system of communication between the various nursing institutions. It provides a medium by which its members can become acquainted with the opera- tions of an official organization on a state as well as on a national level. On the lighter, recreational side, the Nursing students have organized two clubs to accommodate their excess energies. They are the Basketball Club and the Swimming Club and their names easily bespeak their functions. The nurses, it is clear, have a well-rounded extracurricular life. His expression of self must be articulate, accurate, directed to his search- ing disciple. And as all men are teachers, they give of themselves to be new beginnings for a greater generation. The past has aimed toward this goal, as does the present. The men of this generation must look to the past to know themselves, must speak to their fel- lows to plan a future, and must choose in this future the mode of best expressing themselves. Thus a cycle of aspirations flows from the university into a future of expectancy. The clubs represented on the preceding pages are communicative of just such a cycle of aspira- tions. 269 STANDING COMMITTEE ON CULTURAL AND INFORMATIONAL AFFAIRS WILLIAM HETZER JOHN REILLY ROBERT BAKER ROBERT MURPHY 270 SETONIAN FILM SOCIETY President EDWARD COLLINS V ice-President ARTHUR SCHUTE Secretary JAMES REILLY Treasurer JAMES GALLIGAN Student Council Representatives EDWARD NEMETH LEONARD SULLIVAN Faculty Advisors REV. But Culture is a much maligned and misunderstood word, whose mere mention can elicit confusion and even antagonism. But the fact stands that at Seton Hall there are ten distinct activities that are concerned with things cultural, all of which seem to be enjoyed by their members and the large audiences they reach. The key to this cultural renaissance lies perhaps in the very fact that these activities are sources of enjoyment. Enjoy Opera? Enjoy Dramatics? The answer of any enthusiastic chorus member or animated walk-on would be an un- reserved yes, and his reason would probably be precisely because he can participate in the activity and feel himself a part of it. Many of these organizations were founded by students themselves, who had become interested in these things on their own or had learned about them elsewhere, and then wished to share their experiences and build upon them. From their outset, then, these activities were marked by that sense of independence which is almost inherent in any activity that is truly “student orien- tated” and which manifests itself in the variety of clubs and the alacrity with which clubs are formed and reformed. This last year alone, two new organizations, one, The Standing Committee on Informational and Cultural Affairs, a broadly based general culture committee, and the other, a Music Appreciation Club, were activated. Perhaps the titles of these clubs suggest somewhat specialized interest groups, but they are actually built more on enthusiasm and spirit than on specialized knowledge. And en- thusiasm and spirit are things that anyone can bring to an organization. Yet these organizations are more than mere groups of good intentioned but ineffec- tual devotees or of individuals seeking self-fulfillment. The art form or study itself around which the activity is organized suggests certain directions and channels for the enthusiasm and imposes certain standards. There are certain nuances to a Verdi opera that must be captured before even an untrained music ear will accept it, and the singing of the Messiah by our combined Glee Clubs requires much more than a mere grasp of notes and techniques. Drama is formalized, by the proscenium stage and the realistic tradition of American dramaturgy and yet the Workshop Theatre group real- izes that if they are to accomplish anything permanently significant, they must build on this traditional base. Literary choice would seem to be limitless; yet there is something within the individual that makes him seek the perfect, and there is something in those works of literature that have come to be considered masterpieces that alone answers that thirst. And so the Literary Club must deal with these works; but the en- counter is not academic. It is vital. The Center of Italian Culture seeks to under- stand and preserve a certain definite cultural tradition; yet in attempting to com- municate the beauty of that tradition, it realizes that the communication must be in terms of their audience. And while WSOU opens its door to any interested student, and in this it is truly the Voice of Seton Hall, the voice of the students; yet there is something about an open microphone and a potential audience of several thousand that is frightening and imposes its own discipline. In all these activities we see the interplay of individual freedom and taste and also the discipline that is inherent in the areas in which they operate. This discipline is not imposed from without, but from the outside comes the third element that brings these activities their fulfillment. And this is an audience. All these activities, whether involving music, art, or what have you, not only technically need a listener or viewer, but also, since they are involved with things that we consider beautiful and to some extent the zenith of our civilization, demand to be promolugated. The audience com- pletes the activity but the activity complements and completes the audience. At the university the relationship is pregnant: The university is made more a university and the individual is better able to see his distinct part in it and the distinct contribution he can make to it.
