HEADS REVEREND THOMAS W. CUNNINGHAM, A.M. Fordham University THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH The Department of English provides an ade- quate background in writing skill and literary ap- preciation, and offers special courses for those desiring further work in literature. Seton Hal! is one of the few institutions of higher learning which requires American Literature of its English majors; offering, in addition, courses dealing with every period of English Literature. Fr. Cunningham has added courses in creative writing, supplying the students interested in this field with the practical application of the methods used in the literary world. A Senior thesis is now a prerequisite for graduation. REVEREND THOMAS J. GILLHOOLY, A.M. Columbia University DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS The Department of Communication Arts guides the student toward future specialization in the fields of radio, television, journalism, and the theater. The department is unusually well equipped, having a modern theater and radio station as appropriate classrooms and laboratories for the training of students. Courses include Radio Dramatics, Stage Design, Radio Writing, Broadcasting, and kindred studies. Although the present curriculum is broad and varied, Fr. Gillhooly is planning an even more extensive program of instruction to include all phases of Communication Arts.

Seton Hall College THE DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICAL LANGUAGES The Department of Classical Languages of Seton Hall College provides the basic courses for the Bachelor of Arts degree. Through the study of classical literature, the student acquires a cultural background and a practical knowledge of the elements of Latin and Greek. A major may be pursued leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Classical Languages, providing the student ful- fills the additional requirements set forth by the Department in Latin and Greek language and his- tory, plus the rudiments of ancient literature. REVEREND JOSEPH H. BRADY, Ph.D. Columbia University THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL STUDIES The Department of Social Studies provides the general courses in this field that are required of a!! candidates for degrees, as well as the more special- ized work required for major study. Majors are offered in a general program of Social Studies, in History, Political Science, and Sociology; the stu- dent who desires a better preparation for teaching or for the study of law receives comprehensive training in these fields. The Department also pro- vides all students with courses in European and American History which inculcates a proper ap- preciation of our American institutions and Chris- tian heritage. 24

REVEREND MICHAEL I. FRONCZAK, A.M. Columbia University THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY The Department of Biology offers major and minor work qualifying the student to teach Biology in secondary schools, or to pursue advanced work in institutions of graduate standing. The program presented by this Department meets the require- ments of the New Jersey State Board of Education for teachers of biological science in the secondary schools of the State. The Department also prepares the student for the professional schools of medicine and dentistry. In this respect, Fr. Fronczak adheres to rigorous standards and is generally guided by the suggestions of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Consequently, Seton Hall continually places a high percentage of its qualified students in the nation ' s leading medical schools. REVEREND WALTER G. JARVAIS, A.M. Seton Hall College THE DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION Courses in religion are obligatory for all Catholic students throughout the entire period of attendance at the College. Freshmen are obliged to take the course in Religion and Reason. Rev- erend Walter G. Jarvais head of the Department has instituted a Catholic pamphlet campaign on the campus, and is always available in his office for private consultation. In addition to his various duties as head of the Department, Father Jarvais is also the Spiritual Director of the College. Under his. guidance the Department instills in the minds of the students the truths of the Eternal God and the principles of a Christian education. 26
