THE VERY REVEREND MONSIGNOR THOMAS H. POWERS, A.M. On September 26th, 1948, Pope Pius XII elevated the Reverend Thomas H. Powers, Head of the Divinity School and the Classical Languages Department to the ' honorary rank of Papal Chamberlain with the title of Very Reverend Monsignor. Monsignor Powers, who graduated from St. Theresa s Grammar School in Sum- mit, attended Summit High School. Later attending Seton Hall, Msgr. Powers received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Following this, he went to the Immaculate Con- ception Seminary where he completed his studies for the Priesthood, being ordained March 12, 1927. Immediately appointed to the Seton Hall faculty, Msgr. Powers was named Professor of Greek and Latin. While teaching at the Hall, he also completed studies Tor his Master degree in Classical Languages, and received his M. A. from Seton Hall. The Archbishop appointed Monsignor Powers Head of the Divinity School at Seton Hall in 1939, and along with this responsibility he was further appointed Head of the Department of Classical Languages. As head of the divinity school, the newly-created honorary Papal Chamberlain is responsible for the training and spiritual guidance of all young men studying for the Priesthood in the Archdioscese of Newark and in the Dioscese of Paterson. The ceaseless efforts of Monsignor Powers in behalf of the students under his care has brought honor not only to his name, but to that of Seton Hall. 27
