McNulty has long been intimately associated with Seton Hall. He attended Seton Hall Preparatory School and Seton Hall College, and last year was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Law by His Excellency, Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh. He is also the most recent addition to the Seton Hall Board of Trustees, appointed in May, 1948. Born in New York City, His Excellency was awarded a scholarship to the American College University, Louvain, Belgium. Following his ordination, he served as curate at St. Joseph’s Parish, Jersey City. In 1930 he was appointed Director of the Catechetical Department of the Mount Carmel Guild in Jersey City. The holder of numerous Diocesan appointments from 1936 — and presently the Director of Catholic Youth Organizations in the Archdiocese of Newark — he was elevated to the rank of Monsignor in 1941. In October, 1947, His Excellency was installed as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark. His deeply rooted interest in Seton Hall through the years has made Bishop McNulty an integral part and valued friend of Seton Hall College. 13 THE REVEREND JOHN L. McNULTY, AM., PH.D. President of Seton Hall College The Reverend Doctor John L. McNulty attended Immaculate Conception, Seton Hall Preparatory School, and in 1921 was graduated from Seton Hall College. After a year ' s study at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, the late Bishop O Connor sent him to Louvain where, on July 12, 1925, he was ordained. Returning to the United States, he served as assistant in St. Michael ' s, St. Francis Xavier ' s, and Sacred Heart Churches in Newark before joining the Faculty of Seton Hall College in 1933. In June, 1935, New York University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in French. Dr. McNulty was Director of Seton Hall ' s Master School of Modern Languages, when he was appointed Dean of the Seton Hall College Urban Division in September, 1944 . A member of the Association of Deans of American Colleges and also a member of the Gallery of Living Catholic Authors, Dr. McNulty s tenure as Dean saw the student enrollment increase from 1,800 to 4,100. On March 3, 1949, His Excellency, Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh, President of the Board of Trustees of Seton Hall College, elevated Dr. McNulty to the position of President. 15 THE REVEREND WILLIAM P. FURLONG, A.B., A.M. Vice-President Steeped in the traditions of Seton Hall after attending the college in 1927 and subsequent studies at Darlington Seminary, the Reverend William F. Furlong received his Holy Orders in 1932. Specializing in Sixteenth Century literature, he took his Master of Arts degree at Columbia University, and shortly thereafter joined the faculty of Seton Hall College ' s English Department. It was in 1945 that he was selected for his first administrative post when Monsignor Kelley named him Dean of the College. Rendering outstanding work in that position, he was elevated to the Vice-Presidency of the rapidly expanding college the following year. Since then, despite pressing duties, Father Furlong still finds time to interview members of the faculty and student body. His patience and understanding is as endless as his humor. HOWARD J. LEAHY, B.S.. A.M. Dean In June, 1939, Monsignor Kelley appointed Professor Howarc J. Leahy of Duquesne University to the staff of Seton Hall College as Dire ctor of Student Personnel and Instructor in Psychology. At Duquesne Mr. Leahy served as Professor of Psychology and Student Counselor for two years. Prior to this he had been successively prison psychologist and science teacher in New England high schools. In 1942 he received a leave of absence to join the Federal Bureau of Investiga- tion where he served as Special Agent and Supervisor of Juvenile Matters. He returned to Seton Hall in 1946 to become Director of Admissions and Professor of Psychology. In June, 1948, Mr. Leahy was appointed the first lay Dean in the history of Seton Hall College. REV. JOHN F. DAVIS, A.B., S.T.L Assistant Vice-President REV. WALTER G. JARVAIS, A.B., A.M. Spiritual Director REV. CHARLES B. MURPHY, A.M., B.L.S. Librarian 19 ADMINISTRATIVE FACULTY JOHN F. NEARY, B.S. Director of Admissions JAMES CREGAN Accountant THE VERY REVEREND MONSIGNOR THOMAS H. POWERS, A.M. On September 26th, 1948, Pope Pius XII elevated the Reverend Thomas H. Powers, Head of the Divinity School and the Classical Languages Department to the ' honorary rank of Papal Chamberlain with the title of Very Reverend Monsignor. Monsignor Powers, who graduated from St. Theresa s Grammar School in Sum- mit, attended Summit High School. Later attending Seton Hall, Msgr. Powers received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Following this, he went to the Immaculate Con- ception Seminary where he completed his studies for the Priesthood, being ordained March 12, 1927. Immediately appointed to the Seton Hall faculty, Msgr. Powers was named Professor of Greek and Latin. While teaching at the Hall, he also completed studies Tor his Master degree in Classical Languages, and received his M. A. from Seton Hall. The Archbishop appointed Monsignor Powers Head of the Divinity School at Seton Hall in 1939, and along with this responsibility he was further appointed Head of the Department of Classical Languages. As head of the divinity school, the newly-created honorary Papal Chamberlain is responsible for the training and spiritual guidance of all young men studying for the Priesthood in the Archdioscese of Newark and in the Dioscese of Paterson. The ceaseless efforts of Monsignor Powers in behalf of the students under his care has brought honor not only to his name, but to that of Seton Hall. 27 DEPARTMENT THE VERY REVEREND MONSIGNOR THOMAS H. POWERS, A.M. Seton Hall College THE DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICAL LANGUAGES The Department of Classical Languages of Seton Hall College provides the basic courses for the Bachelor of Arts degree. Through the study of classical literature, the student acquires a cultural background and a practical knowledge of the elements of Latin and Greek. A major may be pursued leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Classical Languages, providing the student ful- fills the additional requirements set forth by the Department in Latin and Greek language and his- tory, plus the rudiments of ancient literature. REVEREND JOSEPH H. BRADY, Ph.D. Columbia University THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL STUDIES The Department of Social Studies provides the general courses in this field that are required of a!! candidates for degrees, as well as the more special- ized work required for major study. Majors are offered in a general program of Social Studies, in History, Political Science, and Sociology; the stu- dent who desires a better preparation for teaching or for the study of law receives comprehensive training in these fields. The Department also pro- vides all students with courses in European and American History which inculcates a proper ap- preciation of our American institutions and Chris- tian heritage. 24 HEADS REVEREND THOMAS W. CUNNINGHAM, A.M. Fordham University THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH The Department of English provides an ade- quate background in writing skill and literary ap- preciation, and offers special courses for those desiring further work in literature. Seton Hal! is one of the few institutions of higher learning which requires American Literature of its English majors; offering, in addition, courses dealing with every period of English Literature. Fr. Cunningham has added courses in creative writing, supplying the students interested in this field with the practical application of the methods used in the literary world. A Senior thesis is now a prerequisite for graduation. REVEREND THOMAS J. GILLHOOLY, A.M. Columbia University DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS The Department of Communication Arts guides the student toward future specialization in the fields of radio, television, journalism, and the theater. The department is unusually well equipped, having a modern theater and radio station as appropriate classrooms and laboratories for the training of students. Courses include Radio Dramatics, Stage Design, Radio Writing, Broadcasting, and kindred studies. Although the present curriculum is broad and varied, Fr. Gillhooly is planning an even more extensive program of instruction to include all phases of Communication Arts. REVEREND MICHAEL I. FRONCZAK, A.M. Columbia University THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY The Department of Biology offers major and minor work qualifying the student to teach Biology in secondary schools, or to pursue advanced work in institutions of graduate standing. The program presented by this Department meets the require- ments of the New Jersey State Board of Education for teachers of biological science in the secondary schools of the State. The Department also prepares the student for the professional schools of medicine and dentistry. In this respect, Fr. Fronczak adheres to rigorous standards and is generally guided by the suggestions of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Consequently, Seton Hall continually places a high percentage of its qualified students in the nation ' s leading medical schools. REVEREND WALTER G. JARVAIS, A.M. Seton Hall College THE DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION Courses in religion are obligatory for all Catholic students throughout the entire period of attendance at the College. Freshmen are obliged to take the course in Religion and Reason. Rev- erend Walter G. Jarvais head of the Department has instituted a Catholic pamphlet campaign on the campus, and is always available in his office for private consultation. In addition to his various duties as head of the Department, Father Jarvais is also the Spiritual Director of the College. Under his. guidance the Department instills in the minds of the students the truths of the Eternal God and the principles of a Christian education. 26 MARTIN J. BYRNE, Ph.L University of Louvain THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY The Department of Psychology has been con- siderably expanded since its establishment in 1946. It now has a modern and completely equipped undergraduate psychological laboratory. Courses in psychology are offered to prepare students for graduate work or for service in the educational, social, commercial, or industrial field where psy- chology is a prerequisite. Mr. Byrne strives when- ever possible to correlate the theoretical studies with practical laboratory experiments. He is also moderator of the Psychological Society which en- deavors to encourage a deeper interest in psy- chology and its allied fields. JOSEPH M. CONNORS, Ph.D. New York University THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION The Education Department, directed by Doc- tor Joseph M. Connors, provides for the pre-service professional training of the parochial and public school teachers on the secondary school level. The Personnel service, operated by the department, endeavors to secure an accurate appraisal of the student by means of standardized tests and personal interviews which determine his fitness for secondary school teaching. Courses are open to the students who, although not primarily interested in Education as a career, may wish to elect such courses to enrich their cultural background. 27 VICTOR J. DeFILIPPO, A.M. New York University THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Department of Health and Physical Edu- cation prepares the student for teaching, coaching, and administrative positions in schools and related fields. The curriculum stresses the development of personal skills together with the comprehensive presentations of modern techniques of teaching physical education. Mr. De Filippo offers majors in his department field trips, round-table discussions, and demonstrations, as well as numerous opportuni- ties to supplement their background of theory with actual practical experience. In addition to this pro- fessional training, the course of study provides the broad cultural background of a liberal education. FRANCIS M. HAMMOND, Ph.D. Laval University DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY The Philosophy Department, headed by Dr. Francis M. Hammond, is the oldest in Seton Hall College. Dr. Hammond was appointed head of the department in October, 1946, and has done an excellent job in maintaining the standards of the Philosophy Department in teaching Scholastic Phil- osophy. Only students who have shown signs of intellectual ability, judgment, and studious habits in their Freshman and Sophomore years are ad- mitted. A wide variety of courses is offered by the department to contribute the most to those special- izing in this field. MANUEL HERSCHDORFER, M.S. New York University THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS The Department of Mathematics is an integral part of a liberal arts college. The courses in this Department are arranged to meet the requirements of several types of students. It offers majors in the pure and physical sciences the necessary back- ground for their studies. To majors in Education, the Department is essential for the teaching of mathematics. The Department is also designed for those who seek only the elements of mathematics to round out their education. Mr. Herschdorfer is currently at work building the curriculum to include a more extensive range of subjects. JULIUS S. LOMBARDI, Ph.D. Laval University THE DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES The Department of Modern Languages is quali- fied to- extend to its candidates a complete curricu- lum in French, Italian, Spanish, and German. The languages are taught by the grammar, phonetic, and direct method of teaching, with favorable conditions provided for the student personnel. Special provisions are made during the courses to correlate the work with history, literature, social customs, crafts, art, and music of the country con- cerned. Every student aspiring to a degree is re- quired to take two years of language, and is guided in his selection by Dr. Julius S. Lombardi, the depart- ment head. 29 WILLIAM G. SHARWELL, B.S. Seton Hall College THE DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION The Department of Business Administration is the largest in the College. It offers major fields of study in Accounting, Advertising, Business Manage- ment, Economics, Labor Relations, and Personnel Management. The Department also provides the student with a liberal training in the arts, sciences, and philosophy to further round out his education. While modern business presents problems of a complex and technical nature requiring specialized experience for their solution, Mr. Sharwell believes that the Department can help the student make the adjustment to a specialized task more readily by stressing the fundamental economic and business techniques. MATTHEW STEELE, Ph.D. Columbia University THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES The Department of Physical Sciences offers an extensive curriculum in chemistry and physics. The Department prepares the student for the profes- sional schools of medicine and dentistry, and for commercial, industrial, and graduate work. All majors must meet stringent requirements formulated in acordance with the recommendations proposed by the American Chemical Society. In addition, students must also pursue basic courses in the liberal arts. Mr. Steele, in conjunction with Fr. Fronczak, Head of the Biology Department, has been en- trusted with the duty of supervising the courses of students aspiring to the medical and dental pro- fession. 30 ROBERT E. ANSHELES Ph.B. During the elections the largest car- bon atom in existence was handed out, a Miss Shmoo contest was conducted, and Siamese invisable fish were donated to the Biology Department. The returns elected Harry Fox President of the Class of 1950. Pat Lynch was elected Vice-President, with Jim Quinn managing the funds of the Treasury, and Jay Murray penning the correspondence of the class as Secretary. The Junior Class sent two able men to the Student Council in the persons of Dave Lucas, elected President of the Council, and Tony Buicko, elected Vice-President. Because of the urgent business of acquiring class rings and setting up the policies of the class, the social season didn ' t swing into high gear until rather late in the fall. Lost time was made up by the first affair — The Christmas Ball — held in the gymnasium on December 18th, to the music of Jimmy McArdle and his orchestra. The gym was decorated with trees, holly, and mistletoe to help accentu- ate the Christmas spirit. Also door prizes and corsages were awarded to special dance winners. With the ability of the Junior Class proven, the Junior Prom should be a real. success. 215 Pardon bones These @ Tb$ Tb@ college kids! A prolific field of candidates tossed their weathered chapeaux into the ring along with a flood of circulars, signatured blotters, and campaign slogans. The result was a wild, colorful, and spectacular free-for-all with the whole Soph class catching its hectic spirit. When the smoke of battle cleared and the dead and wounded cared for, the ballot count recorded a victory for the Triple A ticket. The masters of the ring for the year were 0eorge DiGhdio as President, Jules Simanol the Vice-President, Joseph Nasello the Secretary, Antonio Marino the Treasurer and Samuel Spina and Norman Mopsik in the Student Council Representative spots. 219 Father Joe shows them how CARL WIMLEY Treasurer 222 A rousing election campaign launched the Freshman Class last Fall. Coming out on top in a political scramble was Your Party, which was captained by Frank Sweeney, Jr., of Bloomfield. Sweeney was elected President and other successful mem- bers of his party included Carl Jurew, Vice-President, Robert Larkin, Secretary, and Carl Wimley, Treasurer. The two Student Council seats went to John Griggs and Herbert E. Scourzo, who also served as Council Secretary. The Freshman Class reflected the current trend in the sharp decline of veteran enrollment for the first time since the end of the war. Although the number of students entering the Hall in September was less than that of the two previous years, it remained well above that of the average pre-war enrollment. Highlighting the social activities of the class was their spring hop, held in the Gym on April 23rd. Decorations for the dance carried out a springtime motif. Members of the class entered many of the campus organizations, includ- ing WSOU and the Setonian, on which Richard Kruschka became News Editor. 223 SETOH HALL NIGHT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN Making the presentation. Beset with cross currents and trade wi nds, it wasn ' t until Joe Orlando, Joe Sergent, Paul Ewing, and Jim Laciopa took the helm that the Galleon really began to sail straight and true on its course. November and December will be remembered by Emil Gritti ' s trail of four million cigarette butts between the spacious Galleon office and Richard ' s Studio, by Howard Trachtenberg and Ed Dillon moving their cots into the office to be on hand for photo assignments, by Don Wackerle scouring the campus for the football team, by the 359,000 gallons of gasoline Emil Hensler burned in getting two ads, by Norton Bloom ' s apoplectic seizure over a layout change, and the six days and seventeen nights John Apostolik spent on the table in the cafeteria getting three seniors to have their names engraved on the yearbook cover. Then the photos started pouring in, burying Art Clare and Fred Bond, and driving Martin J. Byrne out of his office in the Psych lab to a rest home. January was the last minute month. Teachers were pulled out of classes, Charlie Schweit- zer shot up a flare signalling the receipt of all copy, and Joe Sergent and Paul Ewing began compiling the book. But seriously, it wasn ' t one man, or two, or three men who put out this book, but the entire staff. Each contributed his share that was essential to the whole. They guided the Galleon into port. If we somehow captured the spirit of Seton Hall and our graduating class, modesty compels us to say that we knew it all along! 228 111 STAFF Joseph A. Orlando Editor-in-Chief Joseph A. College inaugurated the first completely student-operated radio station in the United States. WSOU-FM, 89.5 megacycles, operates with an R.C.A. transmitter of 2000 watts and covers approxi- mately a seventy-five mile radius embracing most of New Jersey and a good part of New York and Pennsylvania. Equipped with three studios, a news booth, news room, and four remote lines, WSOU is capable of broadcasting every type of program. The Voice of Seton Hall College sounds a true note of versatility by presenting programs featuring music — classical and popular — drama, live bands and vocalists, fashions, news, college sports coverage, and many others. Under the direction of the Reverend Thomas J. Gill- hooly, WSOU, since its inception, has become an integral part of Seton Hall College. No review of the successes scored by WSOU would be complete without a tribute to all the men of the student body whose long and arduous labor made those successes possible. To the disc jockeys, announcers, dramatic players, newscasters, music librarians, technicians — to each and every one of the many men in every capacity, we express our appreciation. This has been accom- plished by an unprecedented heavy schedule, which included approximately twenty formal and informal concerts given at colleges, banquets, reunions, and diversified affairs highlighted by the annual Spring Concert. Among the well-remembered engagements of this and previous years were concerts at Marywood College, Scranton; Georgian Court; Caldwell Col- lege; College of St. Elizabeth; Notre Dame Col- lege; Ladycliffe College; Chestnut Hill College; Jersey City Medical Center; Robert Treat Hotel, and Albertus Magnas College, New Haven, Conn. The Songsters have thrice been invited to a joint concert with the College of New Rochelle at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, thus becoming the only college glee club to be invited for more than one performance. The College Glee Club was founded by Mr. Nicola A. Montani, K.C.S.S., who was succeeded by Godfrey Meyer, Francis Zavaglia, Edward McGill, and Edward Henneberry. The present director, Mr. Joseph Murphy, was appointed in 1947, at which time he became Acting Director of the Arch-diocesan Institute of Sacred Music. Seton Hall ' s Dramatic Society, under the moderation of the Reverend Thomas J. Gillhooly, has presented its most ambitious season. In addi- tion to presenting its usual spring production, the Society has endeavored to further activate its or- ganization by staging a December play. The prim- ary purpose of the Dramatic Society is to provide a continuous stream of entertainment by and for the students. The secondary purpose is to offer a vital outlet to those students whose talents lie in stagecraft. This year was an auspicious start toward achieving these ends. On the nights of December 9, 10 and I I, the Dramatic Society players initiated the sea- son with the Reverend Gerard Majella Murray s hilarious comedy Career Angel. Under the astute direction of Charles White, assisted by Matthew Pesaniello, the story of the near bankrupt orphanage run by idealist Brother Seraphim came vividly and memorably to life. The first phase of the Dramatic Society ' s energetic program was a complete success. The second phase shall prove equally gratifying. TENSE MOMENTS FROM CAREER ANGEL : Brother Sera- phim (E. GILLHOOLY Moderator STUDENT COUNCIL The paramount objective of the Student Council is to maintain the highest degree of cooperation among the students, the Administration, and the Faculty of Seton Hall College. This is accomplished with a high degree of success at each meeting of the Council. This year the presidency was placed in the hands of David Lucas, who last year worked diligently with the Council in accomplishing much of its work. Other officers are: Anthony Buicko, Vice-President; Herbert Scuorzo, Secretary; and Samuel Spina, Treasurer. One of the principal functions of the Council is to program the social calendar. This is done by the Dance Committee under the chairmanship of Tony Buicko. Among its other activities were the adoption of a stabilized consti- tution to replace the inefficient one of the past, the estab- lishment of an effective election procedure, and a greater representation of the general student body on the Council. Together with all the members, President Dave Lucas has established a successful standard for future members of the Student Council, 243 W. Baden; C. THOMAS MORE The St. Thomas More Pre-Legal Society has established its identity as an honorary and active organization composed of Setonians preparing for legal careers. Now in its ninth year of existence, the Society has become one of the most popular organizations on the campus. Under its capable moderator, Mr. William R. Dineen, Villanova and John Marshall Law School graduate, the group has acquired a wealth of first-hand legal knowledge. Bi-monthly meetings have produced visits to various courts of law, guest speakers in the field, and have inspired discussions on current legal events. The St. Thomas More Pre-Legal Society, in short, seeks to project a stimulated program which will promote and encourage legal interest among its members. Now, men, stay away from ambulance cases. BROWIVSOm SOCIETY Once again the Brownson Debating Society has one of the East s strongest debating team. As in the past, the Society leads Seton Hall in student activities. The Society organized and sponsored the Summer Festival and the Freshman Welcome Dance in order to raise capital to defray the expenses that are incurred. Reverend Thomas Gillhooly and Mr. Paul Jordan are the moderators for the society. The officers are: President, William Boyle; Vice-President, David Lucas; Secretary, Wil- liam Morley, and Treasurer, Louis Lardiere. After an initial defeat inflicted by Notre Dame, the Brownson Debating Society has met and conquered Geor- gian Court and St. Peter ' s. An ambitious schedule has been arranged, at the head of which is the Eastern Debate Tournament at Hofstra. Topics of debate this year concern the question of Spanish entrance to the United Nations, and the national debate question of Federal Aid to Education. He shows ' em how it ' s done. This scientific organization is a chapter member of a national institution, The American Chemical Society, the world s largest scientific body. It is composed of Science majors with a high scholastic average, its main objective being to further the advancement of Chemistry at Seton Hall. Educational tours are made to many scien- tific companies, films are shown, and guest speakers lecture. Valuable contacts are made with senior members of nearby chapters. Students are also permitted to attend meetings of the Newark chapter, as well as the National Convention. The society acts as a liaison between the social, collegiate, and the practical industrial world. A gold key, designed for the Academy, is presented each year to eligible Seniors and Juniors who are outstanding in the organization. If the Academy instills in the student a truly professional pride in science, it shall have fulfilled the purpose for which its originators founded it. The Academy holds its annual banquet. Moderator of the Psychological Society, Prof. Martin J. Byrne. PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY Lying dormant for seven years, the Psychological Society has been reorganized. Its purpose is to provide a common medium of expression for students having serious interest in psychology, thereby .broadening their aproach to, and their experience in the field. The Psychological Society is certainly typical of the way in which Seton Hall has grown since the end of the war. Professor Martin J. Byrne, the Moderator, recalls that, in 1941, we had no laboratory, hardly any equipment ... in fact, no psychology department! Now, a Department has been established, and a psychology building has been built with an up-to-date, well equipped laboratory. It is, in Professor Byrne ' s opinion, one of the best undergraduate psychology laboratories in- the entire country. The specific aims of the Psychological Society are to receive information per- taining to graduate work and vocational oportunities in the field, and to become aware of current problems of applied psychology. Dr. Hammond poses with a small segment of the Philosophy Circle during one of its bi-monthly meetings ' held in the Little Theater. In order to broaden the student ' s knowledge in philosophy and to stimulate further interest in it, this club was organized last year under the direction of Dr. Francis Hammond, Head of the Philosophy Department. A student committee prepares programs for members. Read- ing of the works of important philosophers, both past and present, is encouraged to enliven group discussions which furnish the nucleus of the circle ' s activities. Last year, Dr. Charles DeKonnick, Dean of the Philosophy Faculty of Laval University, delivered a splendid lec- ture on Dialectical and Historical Materialism. Dr. Hammond is amazed by the amount of student enthusiasm in the philosophy club. Before the war, he recalls students were indifferent, generally, toward philosophy. Now there is a new aware- ness — perhaps because the students are older and more mature, maybe because of their experience with foreign peoples and ideas while in service. To Dr. Hammond, philosophy is basically the study of a way of life. And, he asserts, we hope, in the Philosophy Circle, by reading, judging and comparing various ideas, to arrive at a firmer grasp of the Christian way. Francis Hammond, Ph.D., moderator. PHILOSOPHY CIRCLE 248 N.F.C.C.S. These initials stand for the National Federation of Catholic College Students. Seton Hall is a member of the New York-New Jersey region of this national organiza- tion. It is not a separate club on the campus, but rather a medium through which the various student activities of Seton Hall can find a common meeting-place with similar activities on the twenty other campuses of this region. In this manner, such organizations as debating clubs, mission groups, inter-racial societies and Catholic Action groups unite their individual efforts and produce a fruitful collective result. A comparatively new organization on the campus, the N.F.C.C.S. has fast climbed the ladder of importance. Its very nature tells the reason for its meteoric ascent. Father Cunningham, the Moderator of the Seton Hall chapter, has done an outstanding job in the short time the organization has been on Setonia’s campus. INTER - RACIAL COUNCIL Dedicated to the task of cementing better relations among the different races on and off campus, the Inter-Racial Council, since its inception in April, 1948, has worked in the interest of inter-racial justice. The organization, with Mr. Robert E. Ansheles as moderator, held its election of officers for 1948-49 in October. H. Jonathan Fox was elected President, and William ( Steve ) Donahue received the Vice-Presidency. Irwin Berman served as recording secretary and Robert Fferbert became corresponding secretary. The treasure ' s post went to Leo E. White, and Henry Dougherty acted as the representative on the National Commission for Inter-Racial Justice. Mr. Charles M. Lynch was accorded an honorary mem- bership in the Inter-Racial Council. On November 17th, 1948, the group sponsored a sports smoker, which was held in the college gymnasium. It ' s success was heartening to both the Council and students interested in dis- couraging racial and religious prejudice. Moderator Robert Ansheles and President Herman Fox. Management comes to the Hall in the person of James Fagin, Attorney. S.A.M. The Seton Hall Chapter, Society for the Advancement of Management, was organized in the Summer of 1948 when it was realized that an organization was needed in which students majoring in Business Administration could be- come acquainted with the practical application of the scientific principles of management. Sponsored by the Northern New Jersey Chapter, the Seton Hall Chapter was preserved its Charter on November 30, 1948, by Mr. Clifton Cox, President of the Northern New Jersey Chapter. The Chapter at Seton Hall has for its purpose to conduct and promote, through research, discussion,, publication and other means, the scientific study of the principles governing organized effort in industrial and economic life. The programs of the Chapter are arranged to stimulate interest in competent and scientific management by presenting guest speakers in all phases of the business field. 251 Educators of the future. EDUCATION CLUB One of the newer dubs on the campus, the Educa- tion Club was organized to promote a better type teaching profession and to create an immediate awareness of the problems which will confront young teachers. Current practices and educational trends are critically evaluated. The nominal and actual policies of Guidance Departments are investigated in local commercial high schools and in the colleges. Methods of teaching are com- pared, with guest speakers lecturing in detail on such specific topics as the progressive method of teaching children, the value of sports in academic life, the role of the parents in education, and other subjects of a similar nature. The club ' s most important objective is to develop solutions for educational problems. Another of the club ' s more important functions is the investigation of fields closely allied to the teaching profes- sion. The idea that a well-rounded and diversified scope of knowledge makes the better teacher is the motivating force of this endeavor. The out-dated method by which a teacher restricted himself to his own subject is now dis- couraged. Doctor Connors, the Moderator of the Education Club, plans an ever-increasing expansion of the club ' s activi- ties in future years. If this past year ' s successes are pre- cursors of things to come, future Setonians have much to look forward to. Left to right: Joseph Moss, President; Dr. Joseph M. PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLUB The Physical Education Club is devoted to the interests of majors in the Department of Health and Physical Education. It endeavors to develop in its members a high professional spirit, to promote excellence in scholarship, and to assist in the preparation of leaders in the field. The officers of the club initiated a new practice this past year designed to give members some practical experience in coaching. Qualified men were selected to coach teams of various local youth organizations in basketball, football, baseball and the other sports. In this way, Seton Hall not only aided in the education of its own men, but gave the kids the instruction they needed in the rudiments of sports and sportsmanship. The men within this department and club have belied the accusation that Phys Ed majors develop brawn but no brains. Their devotion to building up Christian ideals of sportsmanship in the youth with whom they come in contact, their own enviable record for sportsmanship, and their academic proficiency all testify to the mental character they possess. Our Phys Ed men may be well satisfied with their ability to lead America ' s youth. Its immediate popularity is evidenced by the number of games in progress at all hours in the Chessman ' s Corner of the cafeteria, where the Chess Knights have com- pletely replaced the pinochle players. The youthful organization opened its season auspiciously, defeating Fordham and Union Junior Colleges while losing only to Rutgers University. Later in the year, games were played with C.C.N.Y., Drew, Monmouth College, Army, Bergen Junior College, Newark Rutgers, St. Peter ' s College, Co- umbia nd Harvard. An invitation to join the North Jersey Chess League is being considered. If ac- cepted, it will considerably increase the present heavy schedule. His purpose is to correlate mathematics with the stu- dent s other studies, not merely to present it as an isolated subject. The club presents lectures on pure and applied mathematics by prominent mathema- ticians, activating a genuinely cultural interest in the subject. The outtsanding contribution of the club for this past year was the series of lectures on The Geometry of Vector Spaces and lhe Theory of Rel- ativity, by Mr. Peng Wang Sun, a distinguished mathematician. BOOSTER CLOB The Seton Hall College Booster Club is an organization which pervading circumstances on the campus brought into being. It represents a spontaneous spirit which has always existed. Last year the Booster Club organized transportation to the away basketball games. However, in the minds of its members, the club was meant to include all things Setonian. With this thought in view, a formal meeting was held in November to formulate plans and to elect officers. Mr. Robert Ansheles was again appointed Moderator of the organization. Joe Urban was unanimously elected President. This year, in addition to organizing trips to the Seton Hall away games, the Boosters have staged two rally nights and parades. Complete with bonfires, snake dances, and motor cavalcades, the rally-parades gave the ordinarily quiet village of South Orange a shot of adrenalin, and obtained a wealth of new Boosters recruited from the ranks of the villagers. Galleon set sail at Frank Dailey ' s Meadowbrook on the night of Feb- ruary 18th to the music of Ray McKinley and his orchestra. Five hundred forty-one seniors and their dates clambered aboard to dance away their last college formal. Greeting them at the gangway were Skipper Bob Hildemann and his crew who did such a smooth job in fitting out and launching the ship. The highlight of the evening was the selection of the Queen of the Ball. The difficult choice was made by those two characters of Station WNEW, Gene Raeburn and Dee Finch, who decided that Miss Dolores Jones was the Queen. A few fast sets of fox trotting set the pseudo-hayseeds up for square dancing, which proved to be deceptively effortless. In no time the big, rugged collegians were purple- faced from exhaustion. However a gallon or two of cider quickly revived most, the rest passed ou t. The evening ' s highlight was when Walt Pierce, groggy from studying, stumbled into the gym look- ing for Chloe. BASKETBALL Despite the roughest schedule in recent years, the Pirates sailed through the 1948-49 season with an enviable record. The season was launched against Loyola with a 67-64 triumph. With high aspirations the squad journeyed to Allentown, Pennsylvania, to face a formidable Muhlen- berg quintet. In a bitterly contested game the Pirates went down to defeat, 68-66. Returning home the Pirates added Dayton, Detroit, and William and Mary to the victory side of the ledger. Next on the agenda was mighty Louisville, winner of last year ' s N. A. I. B. Tournament in Kansas City. A stiff contest ensued before the Pirates bowed their head in defeat in an overtime tilt, 71-69. Easy wins were registered over Texas A M, Xavier, and Lafayette. Then in a thrilling overtime battle, Seton Hall nosed out Rutgers, 63-61, and won the mythical New Jersey Championship. Sailing south the Pirates arrived at Loyola of Baltimore only to be scuttled in the closing moments, 74-70. Faring better on their home court Seton Hall con- quered Texas Wesleyan, Providence, and Albright. The Hall next invaded Brooklyn only to be nipped by the Terriers of St. Francis in a hard fought struggle. Siena, second ranking defensive t eam in the nation, lowered its flag to the Pirates. Seton Hall ' s 58 points was the highest registered against a Siena team in three years. A victory over Georgetown and a loss to Syracuse prepared Seton Hall for the crucial tilt with L. I. U. in the Garden. Before 17,000 fans the Pirates displaying perfect form led at the half, 32-24. The inability to stop Sherman White in the second half cost Seton Hall the contest, 57-53. Marty Glickman, famous sports announcer, stated: Seton Hall played the greatest first half of any team seen in the Garden in recent years. Illinois Wesleyan fell to the Pirates, but Villanova, N. C. A. A. District II representatives, handed the Hallers a pair of setbacks. Creighton fell to the Pirates, 62-47, and in this game Frank Saul passed the 1,000 point mark for his college career. The season closed against Scranton with a 63 to 33 victory. This year marked the last appearance in the Blue and White for Dick Hammock, Tom Leverte, Howie Janotta, Harry Renner, John Reilly, and Frank Saul, who had the honor of playing in the East-West All-Star game. 274 oo«D ftj t ( £«N%, ukU COV. i|?W W K sb k S.5 s«n? i FttSS — ' Main . -: $£T°f OUtH «SU Kl c i r: ' isJ ' l c V CO f 4S ' r p o 1 The Seton Hall Pirates. Com- posed of some of the finest material from the high school ranks of New Jersey and New York, its height was only average but its play was far above average. The Frosh defeated such fine yearling squads as L. I. U. 58-47 and 74-55; and St. Francis 51-50 and 51-44, by using their fast- breaking tactics to great advantage. After getting off to an impressive start with wins over Iona, Paterson, and Upsala, the team first tasted defeat at the hands of C. C. N. Y. Later in the season an attempt to repay the powerful City College failed After a string of victories oved Rutgers Frosh, Fort Dix, Albright, and Bay- onne, our first year Pirates met and lost to Carteret Acad- emy on the bandbox court of the West Orange prep school. Their only setback was to a strong Manhattan squad. Not to be outdone by the Varsity, the Frosh defeated the year- ling squads of Manhattan, Bloomfield College, Rutgers, Villa- nova, St. Francis, and Fordham. In addition to the team s unparalleled performance, Captain Billy Sheppell rated a berth on the 1948-49 All-American soccer team. Coach Will Garry deserves a lot of credit for turning out such a record crop of booters. Afier trouncing Siena 10 to I at Albany, and slaughtering Bridgeport 8 to 0 on the Setonia field, the Pirates were ready for Springfield on November 20. Springfield had won 33 out of its last 34 games, and was the recognized holder of the Eastern Intercollegiate Soccer Crown. With the score knotted at five-all at the end of regulation time, two overtime periods only succeeded in tieing the score again at 6-6. Bert Abbazzia led the scoring with twenty goals for the year. St. John ' s Redmen, captained by Ed McGrath, 1947 Eastern Indoor champ, managed to scuttle the Pirates. Perhaps the major luminary on the schedule was William Mary, winner of the 1947 and 1948 National Inter- collegiate Crowns, and possessor of a string of sixty consecu- tive victories. Al Stein and Aaron Kurtzman have shone splendidly in their specialty, the breaststroke. The Hall s divers, Carpinello and Willems, also have brought glory to the team. The year 1948 was the year of the new look in fashions, but an old story in Pirate success as our boys batted and fielded their way through thirteen victories out- of a fifteen-game schedule. Lafayette, District II, N. C. A. A. Champion was defeated by the Pirates. Rutger ' s eleven- game winning streak was snapped by the hurling of Red Sweeney. These achievements were due in great part of the astute coaching of Ownnie Carroll, a veteran campaigner of no mean ability. Previous graduations had thinned our baseball ranks and the selection of first string ball players was wide open. The boys drilled, Ownnie guided, and Seton Hall won. This year ' s Pirate nine promises a repeat perform- ance of last season ' s record although men like Red Sweeney, Walt Singer, Jim Deery, and Emil Restaino have been wooed away by professional scouts. Kentucky 4. St. Louis 5. San Francisco SETONIAN CL AS GALLEON SIC t l What was the biggest upset of the year? Truman- Dewey? Army-Navy? Saddler-Pep? Notre Dame-South- ern California? All these pale into insignificance when compared to the annual Galleon-Setonian tilt. The Galleon squad confident of an easy victory over the Setonian brought only two regulars +o the tussle (the remainder of the team was playing against the Rochester Royals). The Setonian took the floor with seven men (the referees were copy boys who were promised an editorship in case of victory). The Galleoners jumped into an early lead but soon the officiating took command. The Galleon squad was penalized for such offenses as breathing, B. O., and looking at the referee. At the half the score was Setonian 18, Galleon 17. By this time the fans (kin folks of the Setonian players were screaming for blood — that of the editor-in-chief of the Galleon). In this the Galleon team was in complete agreement. In the second half, class began to tell and the Galleon pulled away. With four minutes remaining the Galleon had a comfortable lead. As if on a pre-arranged signal the Setonian ' s clans removed their shoes. This was the straw that broke the Galleon’s back. Unable to breath, the gallant squad collapsed and the Setonian won 37-35 (according to their scorer). 287 (paiMMA and M ME-v bdres. £ $ U £ 19 9 -xW HAUL c tAlKS® NO- rrz.j£- No. ■1 mm ' - ' ■ ■: ' ? . miixon in L £ O N |ge IERSEY Johnson v,y JOHN C.
