FINN Dean of Divinity School 6 Who can imagine Seton Hall Prep Without Father F inn? There is no one Who can. Father Finn has been an intimate part of the Prep since he lirst arrived on the campus in 1939. From that day he has dedicated him- self to the primary purpose of Seton Hall, the development of the complete Christian gentle- man. I-Ie has gone about achieving the goal in many Ways. As an instructor in Religion and Latin, he has contributed to the in- tellectual and moral advance- ment of innumerable Setonians. He has not limited himself to teaching. Through the years he has also concerned himself with the physical portion of a com- plete education. From 1940 to 1946, he acted as procurator of the gymnasium. In the years from 1945 to 1949 he was direc- tor of athletics at the Prep. Father Finn was appointed Dean of the Divinity School at the Prep in 1949. He is respon- sible for admissions to the Divinity School. In his capacity as Dean he guides, counsels, and advises with endless patience and understanding the students of the school. Through weekly meetings Father strives to keep the ideal of the priesthood fore- most in the minds of the young men. In recognition of his im- measurable devotion to the work of God, for his endeavors, for his friendship and for his guid- ance during our years at Seton Hall Prep, we, the class of 1963, do respectfully dedicate our edition of the Tower to Father Francis Finn. 7 The Most Reverend MARTIN W. F ootball, the -focal point of the fall at Seton Hall, is indeed important to everyone, be he spectator or par- sTEvE ticipant. Football helps in molding both a strong mind and body. It makes one think, and be strong in his vvaysg it builds character and instills an everlasting spirit into the hearts of all. Integrity, good judgment, and pride are but little buds springing forth from the sport of men. It was a team witl1 these qualities which this year produced the school's first undefeated football season. Coach Tony Verducci and his able assistants formed a Winning unit from a group of boys whom many believed would never make it. In accumulating a 6-0-2 record, the players also captured their second consecutive state championship. Coaches Frank Tracey, Tony Verducci, and Pete Calcagno. From then on it was easy as the Prepsters marked once in the third and twice in the fourth period to lock up their fifth win of the campaign. For the defense, it was another Whitewash job. SETON HALL 25 IRVINGTON 18 Irvington was next in the Buc's line of conquests. The Pirates scored twice in the first half on touchdowns by Morrison and Hunt, and held a 13-12 lead at intermis- sion. These were the first scores off the rugged Buc defense in six games. Two third period scores cemented the victory. Jim Colan- gelo, whose splendid running ruined Irvington, went over on a 10 yard pass from Morrison. Irvington retaliated with a T.D., but Hunt iced it with a three-yard scoring burst. The Buc defense, led by Harry Snyder, kept the Campers at bay and pushed the team's record to 6-O-1. af f ' ' if , - b Colangelo makes initial stop as defense moves in. The second half brought about a change, as the Hall completely dominated. But the Bees thwarted several scoring threats. On its final march, however, the team moved as though obsessed. Gain after gain brought us within the twenty, but a penalty pushed us back. The Pir- ates moved on. Purzycki made a miraculous catch, but was ruled out of bounds. A penalty forced the Hall back to the Bee 39 yard line, with three minutes remaining. But in less than half that time, the ref- ereeis whistle blew, signifying the end of the game. The 1962 Pirate football squad had earned a tie- and an undefeated season. Come on, big defense! Quarterback Morrison follows H untis interference. SETON HALL 7 ST. BENEDICT'S 7 In the final game of the season, the Pirates went up against a fine St. Benedictis squad, which boasted a 6-1 record. In the the twice-post- poned contest, the Bees mled as prohibitive favorites. They proved their worth in the first half, as Half- back Ralph Lilore scored and a suc- cessful conversion followed. Then it was Setonia's turn. Through the competent running of jim Colan- gelo and the passing of Morrison, the Pirates steamrolled down the gridiron-only to be stopped. But after a Hive punt, the Bucs proved they were not to be denied. Mor- rison hit Dom Zazzaro with a pass, and the fleet halfback took it 45 yards to paydirt. , -A-' 1 'A I' 3' A pg. - , Q9-it 13.5 gk! 5. Q. Behind the very capable coaching of Mr. Frank Tracey, the Pirates rolled up an impressive 15-5 mark. The individual team standouts were John Morrison and Bill O,Brien. Morrison, one of the state's best, averaged twenty-five points a game and proved to be a fine rebounder. One of the area's top backcourt men, O'Brien was a terror on defense and a passing Wizard on offense. Their overall play was vital in every Buc victory. Whenever the defenses collapsed around Morrison, the offensive slack was picked up by Bill Langheld. The junior sharpshooter was also the team leader in rebounds. Steve Schoenhaus was the man be- hind the plays, while Jack Rooney helped keep the de- fense honest with his fine percentage. Iohn Dunnion, Bob Coughlin, and Brian Hunt provided Coach Tracey with excellent bench strength. The remaining reserves included seniors Tom Kelly and Wimpy Matthews, and juniors Bill Ward, Ed Dec, lim Shelhimer, and jack Brennan. MR. FRANK TRACEY REV. VVILLIAM GIBLIN MR. Following an upset loss to St. Benedict's, the Bucs toppled over Hve more foes, in- cluding fine clubs such as Essex Catholic and St. Peter's QN.B.D. It was in the latter game that Morrison set a school scoring record of forty-four points. The regular season was concluded by an upset loss to Belleville and a romp over Thomas Jefferson. VVhile the post-season tournaments failed to produce a championship squad, they did produce one of the team's finest performances and another record breaking effort by Morrison, The Livingston game saw the Pirate ace pour in forty points for an E.C.T. mark. The team,s final victory, against Bergen Catholic, saw the Bucs play one of their best games. With Morrison pouring in twenty-eight points, Bill Langheld and Dewey Dunnion did yeomen work off the boards, as the former threw in eighteen points, Bill O'Brien played brillant defense and contributed eighteen points, as Bob Coughlinfs sharp passes constantly set up scores. Although failing to Win their fourth consecutive state championship, they still man- aged to carry well the name of Seton Hall. The highlight of the season proved to be the harrier,s. winning of the Hudson County C.Y.O. meet. Fine performances by Vadim Scheldenko, John Bonder and Tim McCloone paved the Way to the Buc victory. Although this was the only group meet which the Pirates Won, they came close many times. As in recent years, the team continued to dominate its schedule of dual meets. Many a fine team has fallen to the Pirate squad. The only defeat came at the hands of St. Peter's QN.B.Q. The overall strength of William Persichetty coached teams is evident in the fact that that was the Hrst dual meet loss by a Pirate team in four years. This iine record was the result of days of sweat and determination. The team's success can be chiefiy attri- buted to the running of seniors Vadim Scheldenko, Iohn Bonder, and Bob Ghirlanda. Their performances were instrumental in the team,s success. They were Well backed up by seniors Ioe McKenna, Tom Durkin, and Ioe Tanne. NI Senta M Finn P Broolts G Zahckavlch Continuing his winning ways as one of the state's top track coaches, Coach Bill Persichetty produced another fine indoor track team in 1963. Led by its hurdlers and distance runners, the team did very well in its major indoor meets. Only lack of depth in a few key events prevented an all-winning season. Vadim Schaldenko, the outstanding half-miler in North jersey, teamed with seniors Tom Durlcin and john Bender and junior joe Law to easily hold down the position of top two-mile relay team in the state. Only the Pirate team of two years ago ever ran faster indoors. junior Tom Kerrigan and soph Tim Mclaoone proved to he line reserves. The hurdlers showed their Worth in the state meet, as Don Orth and jim VVolf finished first and second, respec- tively, while Orth set a new state record. The other trackmen also turned in fine johs, although hampered by depth. As the outdoor season approached, the team counted heavily on the indoor stars and the performances of pole vault champ Duane D'Agostino, sprinters Lenny Valge and jolm Ilarrington, high jumper Bob Coughlin, hurdlcr joe McKenna and distance runners Bob Ghir- landa, joe Tannc, and Dan Gavin. The 1963 varsity swimming team continued to follow successfully the paths cut by its predecessors in both statewide and national com- petition. The task of moulding the team at the start of the campaign fell upon the shoulders of the newly-appointed coach, Mr. William F erinden. The team's record easily shows how he fared. The natators compiled impressive victories against the top ' scholastic competition in New jersey. State powers Vlfestiield and Pingry provided the only defeats. Reasons for the team,s success this year: the outstanding per- formances of captains Pat Powers and Tony Lupo, freestylers Mike ' at F altraco, Ed Dellert, Bill McDonough and Randy Messina, diver Fred Brown, breaststrokers Vaughn Dunn and Tom Kavenaugh, backstroker Bill Burke, and individual medley man Bill Smith. Individual team strength was shown in the following meets: the National Catholic Championships at Villanova, the Metropolitan Championships at Seton Hall, and the state meet at Lawrenceville. The Hall placed second in the National Catholics, paced by the championship performances of Powers and Brown. The mermen then went on to win the Metropolitan meet for the second year in a row, and place second in the N.I.S.I.A.A. championships. In the state meet, Powers was crowned state champ in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle, while Faltraco captured the 200-yard individual medley. The 1962 edition of the Seton Hall Prep Junior Varsity football team came through with as commendable a job as any of its fore- runners. The able coaching of Mr. Steve Evanoff and Mr. Bonnie Wilson produced an exemplary record of six wins and three de- feats. Although the backbone of the team was brought up to the varsity in the persons of Steve Dolce, Bobby Petrucelli and George Rockwell, the spirit and desire of the team held fast. Even led by such future varsity prospects as Tom Tully, Marty Levandusky, Joe Amabile, Edward Winogracki and Gene De Salvo, along with Jim Perkins, Bill Fern- andez, Rich Casiano, Bill Lordi and John Almeida, the little Pirates lost a close one to Bloomfield. Hereafter followed five straight wins, over such stalwarts as East Orange, East Side and the Valley. Morristown and St. Benedict's managed to eke out wins over the Hall, but our Bucs bounced back in the sea- son,s finale with a resounding triumph over a powerful Essex Catholic eleven. The school should indeed feel proud of the dedicated effort of the coaches and their charges. f- 535911 1 . M E fr ' , are . , .7 3 ' A if., f i f . J is. g ' ., Au, .-.,..,.-. A ,Q Ks V X ' - H - . Although working with a relatively inexperienced squad, Coach Tony Verducci has again succeeded in turning out a fine J.V. team. Devotion, hard work, and the ability to keep battling were the keys to the squad's success. Each game saw inspired play on the part of the hoopsters. The starting live consisted of sophs Tom Schwester, Bob Pulley, Bill Conover and jim Lombardi, and freshman Jimmy Reynolds. Other players who saw considerable action were co- captain Tom Kroeger, Victor and Gene DeSalvo, and Bob Pet- rocelli. All were instrumental in the team's success. Field general Reynolds possessed a fine jump shot and was a good defensive player. Schwester and Conover were line rebounders, and both scored well. All three are top-flight varsity prospects. Pulley, another line prospect, was a line defensive player and a very able scorer and rebounder. Lombardi shared the fifth spot with Kroeger and the DeSalvos. They and Petrocelli are very capable players. There were several highpoints in season play, which saw the Bucs chalk up a respectable mark. Included were a one-sided victory over arch-rival St. Benedict's, and victory over powerful Central. Several other victories were one-sided as the team's scoring power was not to he denied. The players are sure to continue the winning ways of their varsity counterparts. 111 Look, up in the sky! Better school spirit has been fostered through organized cheerleading, and a more active Boster Club. These were all achieved through the Student Council's efforts. A sense of leadership, the right to voice 0ne's opinion, and mutual cooperation were a few of its accomplishments. Council members listen intently to Sveda's Hlibustering. 124 CDU CIL All right, DiBenedetto, put the dice awayl A . h I i , v T Iij 2 VZ P ' ' - i . l ' o F f-gf l 2 f 'F lt iw, E , N .MEL Q Ai. 1 ' ' A Y ,l 1 W ,I Il 1 lu: 'f - A V Y f Q W I i 7 .2 1' if fi I W I Q Front Row: B. As always The Pirate stands out as one of the best school papers in the area, and again it won first place in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference.
