The Modern Language Department strives to inculcate an appreciation of our diverse heritages. Courses in Italian, French, German, Spanish, and Russian offer unlimited opportunities for the student to ac- quire a basic knowledge of the culture of these nations and a practical knowledge of their languages. It also endeavors to acquaint each stu- dent with the processes of clear thinking and reasoning. All students are required to study algebra for two years, plane geometry for one, and trigonometry for a half year. Electives are also available for those students whose careers demand them. 17
