Paced by John 'gFlip,' lnsabella, ,lim O,Connor, and John DiQuollo, the Seton Hall offense ran over its opponents. Effective line plays were made pos- sible by the vicious and thorough blocking of Russ Goyette, ,lohn Tirpak, and Charles lVlcCurran. The quarterbacking was nicely taken care of by ,lohn DeNoia with the able assistance of John Sheridan. A solid defense, which constantly deprived the opposition of needed yardage, was headed by our all-state center Gayton Ciccone, Joe Reilly, Phil Meehan and defensive ends Richie Karas and Tom Butler. The deep men for Setonia were Richie Bonanno and Phil Scrofani. ln the season's debut, a hard fighting but untried Seton Hall eleven battled a strong Bloomfield squad. Bloomfield was the first to score, and after a score and a successful point after touchdown, the Pirates took the lead. Bloomfield, however, scored again in the fourth stanza to win. Smashing back at East Side, the Pony Pirates squeezed out a 19-18 win. For the fifth straight year Seton Hall edged by highly touted Trenton Catholic by a score of 19-13. The defense was the principal factor in the decisive victory. A superior Seton Hall squad defeated an under- rated St. Michael's Team 12-6, with a last minute quarterback sneak by .lohn DeNoia. Sporting an all but fiawless record, Seton Hall rolled over Bayonne 34--0. DeNoia hooked up with each of his ends for two of the many Seton Hall tallies. The defense again sparkled, refusing to relinquish a single point. After an unexpected defeat by the Pope Pius Eagles 7-6, the enraged Pirates rolled over the Blue Devils of Immaculate. The defense again shut out its opponents 19-0. Seton Hall raised its record to 6-2 with a 44--6 victory over Central High of Newark in preparation for its big bout with St. Benedicts. A determined Seton Hall squad powered its way through the St. Benedicts line for huge gains, but these efforts came in spurts rather than succession. Thus the Pony Pirates led in everything but the final score. As the termination of the season approached, the Pony Pirates competed in the National Catholic Cham- pionship held annually at Villanova Lfniversity. Largely through the efforts of Dick McDonough, Seton Hall was rated third among the schools participating in this meet. Concluding the season was the Metropolitan Championship, held each year at the fniversity pool. The Seton Hall natators placed second in this meet behind a strong St, Francis team. Dick McDonough was again named the outstanding sw immer-setting two meet records in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard freestyle events. Led by captains Dick McDonough and Brian Mc- Carry, the Seton Hall mermen splashed through the season with a very impressive 11-2 record. With an improved training schedule, the hard-working Seton- ians were very impressive in Northern New Jersey competition, following closely the torrid pace set by Columbia and Westheld. Although faced with the problem of replacing key men taken by graduation, the natators lost only to undefeated Westfield and Pingry Prep. Mr. James Fetten, coaching his second year at the Prep, has certainly shown his ability to mold a powerful team from the inexperienced squad he had at the beginning of the season. The individual performances of Olympic hopeful Dick McDonough, backstroker Dan Hurley. and free- stylers Brian lVlcGarry and Bob Crooks were partic- ularly noteworthy in compiling this, the best record of any Catholic school in the state. The harriers of Seton Hall. considered to be one of the best cross-country teams in the state, proved the worth of this statement by winning the Catholic State Title. The amazing record of 10 wins and 2 losses is certainly a fine tribute to this great team. As in preceding years, the team had a full schedule of dual matches with local clubs - not only schools, but also many powerful private clubs. Included among these are: the Caldwell High School team, the Maplewood Rifle Club, and the Kittatinny Riflemen, who for the past four years has occupied the top position in the nation. But the shooters do not confine themselves to dual matches alone. Tournaments, including the New Jersey Sectional, in which the team placed second last year, and the Connecticut State Championships. complete their schedule. Outstanding individual performances also are expected from Setonians. Seniors, Paul livers, who ranked second in the state last year, Pete Moore, Gene Driscoll and George Daddis, along with underclassmen Mike Scollins, Ronald Eng, Nick Arisic, Joe Fabricatore, John Armiger and freshman Jack Daddis are the shooters showing the most promise. Mr. Steve Evanoff, the team's well qualified mentor, by demon- strating all wrestling tactics and emphasizing a deep appreciation of the sport, laid the foundation for future team successes. The team impressed everyone by its desire to win even though it was lacking in experience. Many of the opposing coaches would not believe that the team could be that far advanced after only one year. The first team was made up of three seniors: Captain Jim Coman, Phil Scrofani and Nick DelVlarco: three juniors: Co- captain Art Jennings, Mike Butler, and John Banahang five sopho- mores: Brian Tracey, Pat Butler, Paul Palmucci, Ed Belinski and Mike Hylandg and last but not least two freshmen: Fred Buechel and Paul Konyha. MATHEMATICS CLUB 126 RETREAT Each year a retreat is given to aid the spiritual development of the student body. All the exercises of the day, which in- cluded conferences, rosaries, spiritual readings, and medita- tions, centered about the Mass Model of the Perfect Retreat 1959 and closed with a Solemn Bene- diction. As in previous years the Freshmen were given a separate retreat to enable every- one to profit as much as possi- ble. Rev. james Verity, C.P. 5 Mass, the essence of a Retreat. 5 i I . Rev.
